Illustrated by over 40 drawings and photographs, the encyclopedia also offers numerous useful appendices, including listings of European monarchs, holders of English titles of nobility, holders of major offices of state, sessions and speakers of Parliament, governors of Ireland, major battles and rebellions, 16th-century popes, and bishops of the Early Tudor Church.

Robert Shea was the co-author of the Illuminatus! trilogy with Robert Anton Wilson and the author of six other novels including Shike, All Things Are Lights, The Saracen, and Shaman. He died in 1994.
