Attorney Zoie Taylor thinks that a move back to her hometown of Washington, DC, will make her life simpler. She gives up her high-powered position with a New York City law firm to work for a philanthropic organization. This change allows Zoie to spend more time with her daughter, best friend, and ailing grandmother.

However, Zoie's new position leads to a strange mystery involving Washington's homeless population, a local shelter, and Zoie's enigmatic new beau, Jahi Khalfani. Jahi is passionate about helping those in need, but Zoie suspects that he is keeping secrets from her.

These suspicions lead her to investigate Jahi's shelter and what she finds begins to trouble her.
