A revision text intended for use towards the end of a chemistry course leading to GCSE examination to aid exam preparation. Each chapter features a short revision section followed by worked examples and self-test questions.
This book is intended for use towards the end of a chemistry course leading to a GCSE examination. Its purpose is to help students with their revision and to improve examination performance. Each chapter begins with a short revision section which deals briefly with the topics addressed. The revision section is followed by worked examples. These enlarge upon the topics presented in the revision section and are designed to show students how to present their answers. Further explanation and advice are given occasionally and enclosed in "boxes" to separate them from the answers. Finally, there is a section of questions on which students can practise skills and test their knowledge.
Part 1 Some simple ideas: elements, compounds and mixtures; symbols; chemical changes and changes of state; the separation of mixtures; tests for purity. Part 2 Atoms and molecules: the states of matter; diffusion; atomic stucture; radioactivity. Part 3 The periodic table: the noble gases; trends in properties going across a period; trends in properties going down a group; the transition elements. Part 4 Bonding and structure: crystal structure; oxidation and reduction. Part 5 Moles, formulae and equations: gas volumes; chemical equations; ionic equations; calculating reacting masses from equations. Part 6 Electrochemistry: electrolysis. Part 7 Energy changes in chemistry: electrical cells; light energy in chemistry. Part 8 Rate of reaction: reversible reactions. Part 9 Atmosphere and combustion; separating the gases in the air; processes which use up oxygen; photosynthesis. Part 10 Water and hydrogen: water as a solvent; water supplies; hydrogen. Part 11 Acids, bases and salts: acids; bases and alkalis; strengths of acids and bases; salts. Part 12 The metals: potassium, sodium and lithium - the alkali metals; calcium and magnesium - the alkaline earth metals; aluminium; iron; differences between metals and non-metals. Part 13 Carbon: carbon dioxide; carbonates; the carbon cycle; carbon monoxide. Part 14 Nitrogen: nitrogen; the oxides of nitrogen; ammonia; ammonium salts; nitric acid; nitrates; the nitrogen cycle.
