Lovesong Summary

Lovesong by Abi Morgan

'That is the story of our beginning. And this is the story of...the end' Lovesong is the story of one couple, told from two different points in their lives - as young lovers in their 20s and as worldly companions looking back on their relationship. Their past and present selves collide in this haunting and beautiful tale of togetherness. All relationships have their ups and downs; the optimism of youth becomes the wisdom of experience. Love is a leap of faith.

Lovesong Reviews

"Abi Morgan's love story, spanning the 40-year marriage of Maggie and Billy, is as tender as the bruised peaches that fall to the ground in the garden of the elderly couple's US home Crying is not mandatory, but only the hard of heart will remain completely unmoved." Guardian "Deeply moving, potently mixing memory and desire as the young and old couples interact in passages of superbly eloquent choreography" 4 stars Telegraph "This portrait of ageing and enduring love tugs at the heartstrings" Independent "A ravishing piece of work... The sadness of mortality, the sense of loss, is balanced by the delightful quirkiness of Morgan's text, which is by turns playful and illuminating" 4 stars Arts Desk "Like love itself, Lovesong can take your breath away" Observer "A really beautiful, tender work an unforgettable, elegiac drama" British Theatre Guide "Lovesong is compelling, understated perfection. Where so many writers relentlessly hammer the message home, Abi Morgan lets subtlety, and often what is not said, be a more telling voice both poignant and uplifting [a] beautifully constructed piece a hugely memorable performance." The Stage "An atmospheric, gentle, humorous tear-jerker BAFTA winner Abi Morgan's play is bittersweet and a good supply of tissues may be needed" whatsonstage.com
