Summary
Estienne Barbier, born in the Loire Valley in 1699, is an inveterate liar. He deserts his pregnant wife to stow away to the Cape of Good Hope. He begins to see clearly the sordid dealing that underlies the self-righteous pomposity of the East India Company, and decides to make a stand.
