Summary
Modest, reliable and decorous throughout his life, George Bland faces retirement with unease, an unease compounded by the early death of his friend Putnam, condemning him to unwonted solitude. Yet this, too, is overturned by the arrival of the invasive and mercenary Katy Gibb.
