Books by Arthur Wakefield

Arthur Wakefield, the son of a coal miner, was brought up in Hemsworth during the late 1920s and 1930s. Aged 14 his first job was at South Kirkby pit, where at that time Jimmy Saville was then working. Arthur also worked with Bevin Boys. Brian Elliott is Barnsley's local historian. He is also the series editor for the 'Aspects: Discovering Local History' series which now includes over thirty titles either in print or due for early publication. In 1991, Brian was awarded a Master of Philosophy degree by the University of Sheffield for his research into Barnsley and its surrounding areas. Brian is also the author of 'Pits and Pitsmen'.
