Maria's Code was the result of ten years research. Until 1995 the author was an equine journalist but then Poland's WWII history took precedence. Though unable to speak the language, she appeared twice on Polish television in programmes that appealed successfully for witnesses to come forward. Maria's story of her life in Poggenberg prison is the only complete account of conditions in the camp. The reasons for Maria's survival and their implications still require further research in Germany. This gives the author another language barrier to surmount.
