Anna Schoene's father, Joseph, was a millionaire in 1930s Shanghai. He loved the place and also taking risks, to the extent that when the Japanese army invaded he refused to leave. Instead, he sent his wife and daughter back to the US with the sadly unfulfilled promise that they would be reunited.
