This history of women in Europe synthesizes the research of the last couple of decades. The authors have organized European history from women's perspective, covering both the typical and the extraordinary, the famous and the obscure. Their study aims to show the importance of gender in shaping women's lives, limiting their expectations, opportunities and resources, and defining them by their families and their relationships to men, as daughters, wives and mothers, rather than as individuals.
