Rhyming text describes a menagerie of colorful, cute and mischievous animals. It's up to you to solve the riddle and notice the details to spot the animal pair on each page. Penny Loves: 1. spotting the "twins". It's really fun to read a book that is also a game. 2. when the rhyme gives a clue about the pair. For example, she likes to look for the otters with a fish and the squirrels without nuts. 3. the wonderful, colourFULL art! Penny loves to check out the dogs, yaks and bears, brimming with personality. Mom Loves: 1. Penny was able to spot a few pairs on her own and some pairs were more difficult and took me a long time to find (I enjoyed the challenge). I imagine that this book would be great to bring camping or to share with a group of mixed ages. 2. It's a spotting book that you can read over-and-over. The rhyming text is so nice that even after you have memorized where all the pairs are, it's still fun to read and explore. 3. When I found the Zebra pair I got so excited that I yelled, "FOUND IT". Penny was a bit surprised by my yelling and asked me to, "not get so excited next time", but then she wanted to see the pair. It was fun for us both! * Pennylovesbooks *
Both of my children love spotting books. I have written about some of our favorite spotting books before here , here and here. We recently received another spotting book "Where's The Pair?" and we love it. With a poem one page and the beautiful illustrations on the opposite page, the child is encouraged to find a specific pair of animals. I have to admit it is not always very easy to find the pairs but that makes it more beautiful. And the children are quicker to spot them anyway! Although strictly speaking this isn't a poetry book, the rhyming text in this gorgeously illustrated spotting book plays an important part in enticing the reader to search through the collages pictures. Each two stanza verse acts as both context and prompts to first find, and then match, pairs of animals which are wonderfully camouflaged within the myriad of variations on the page. The verses employ alliteration and a regular rhythm which adds to the memorable experience of delving into this cheerful picture book. * Carousel Magazine *
