Crimes of the Century: Gangs Summary

Crimes of the Century: Gangs by Claire Welch

Gangs have been a way of life for decades, and while the culture may be different today, living on the edge of society is still a mainstay for gang members. Weapons are still part of the package and violence and intimidation prevail. It wasn't so different for gangs organised and 'managed' by the Krays or Richardsons, both based in London, or their peers. For a number of years, young generations of gangs have been described in the press, within inner cities, as the new extended family, but violence still persists. Many young gang members, and other close associates, face death through stabbings and shootings. This book takes a look at not only the gang culture that exists for youngsters today, but how gangs operated in the 20th century.

Table of Contents

Drawing on the Daily Mirror's outstanding archive and Haynes Publishing's wealth of experience, this book continues the successful 'Crimes of the Century' series. Claire Welch has been given access to thousands of hours of investigative journalism to discover just how the early gangs that came to prominence have changed into the criminal outfits that they are today. Across the globe, drugs, kidnap, guns, money laundering, armed robbery, fraud, smuggling (including people smuggling), bikers, and hi-tech crime have all played their part in gangs and gang warfare. Gangs are a powerful and dangerous backdrop to society, woven into the very fabric of everyday life, and they appear to be on the rise. SOCA confirms that most gangs operate in today's society in London, Manchester and Liverpool as well as across the West Midlands, the north and south coast. Street gangs - concentrated in these cities, alongside gangs in Glasgow - are responsible for more than two thirds of firearms-related murders in the UK. Despite the changes in gangs from the thirties, through their hey-day in the 1960s and what they've become today, of the issues that surround gangs and the organized crime, many of the reports documented in earlier centuries read quite similarly to today's newspaper articles and commentaries. Perhaps not much has changed. This book seeks to cover archived newspaper articles on gang organizations from the UK to further afield, from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day.
