The Guinness Who's Who of Fifties Music Summary

The Guinness Who's Who of Fifties Music by Colin Larkin

This is a comprehensive catalogue of the people who shaped the formative decade of popular music as it is known today. Although largely overshadowed by the Swinging Sixties, the pivotal decade in the evolution of popular music was the 1950s. This was the decade of rock 'n' roll, with the rise of legendary performers such as Bill Haley, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Elvis Presley, the Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly. The era also saw a reshaping of music, with vocalists achieving much greater importance, the leading personalities including Guy Mitchell, Johnny Ray, Frankie Laine, Doris Day, Peggy Lee and Rosemary Clooney. Whilst Britain had to wait until the 1960s to assert itself as a major force, performers such as as Tommy Steele, Adam Faith, Marty Wilde, Alma Cogan and Ruby Murray all made a strong impact of the new national pop charts. All these, and many lesser-known artistes, are included in the book.
