This work takes a critical look at the quality of fiction-writing in Britain and compares the work of the "old guard", such as Kingsley Amis, Margaret Drabble, John Fowles and Iris Murdoch, with younger writers, complaining of mediocrity and lack of commitment in the literary establishment.
