Went the Day Well by Derek Tangye
This collection of tributes is to the men and women from many servies and countries who gave their lives for freedom in World War II. Some achieved public attention, others were unsung heroes - all died doing his or her duty, expecting neither reward nor recognition. The stories are written by both ordinary people (such as a mother who lost three sons) and distinguished authors, such as Peter Quennell and Howard Spring, all of whom knew "the savagery of personal loss". First published in 1942 (before the US entered the war), the book is reissued in time for the 50th anniversary of VE Day.
