Pocket Prescriber 2010 Summary

Pocket Prescriber 2010 by Donald R J Singer (University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire, UK)

Building on the success and popularity of previous editions, Pocket Prescriber 2009-10 has been fully updated to incorporate new drugs, to remove drugs no longer on the market and to reflect recent changes in dosages and prescribing practice.

It fills a niche by providing the most essential clinical pharmacology information that busy clinicians need at their fingertips - by focusing on the 500 key drugs that are most commonly prescribed, in an A to Z listing, the book avoids overwhelming the reader with information and remains user-friendly.

Information provided includes dosages, indications, contraindications, side-effects and interactions.

An important section of the book deals with commonly-encountered prescribing problems, selection issues where there are many similar drugs to choose from (such as antibiotics and antihypertensives), and guidance on coping with a wide variety of emergency situations (such as anaphylaxis and overdoses).

Principally aimed at junior doctors, the book is also an invaluable and accessible revision aid for medical students and a practical handbook for nurse and pharmacist prescribers.

Pocket Prescriber 2010 Reviews

Doctors are well aware that when prescribing medicines they must ensure that their prescribing is appropriate and responsible and in the patient's best interests. This book - the Pocket Prescriber, now also accessible in PDA form - is valued by thousands among senior medical students and junior doctors who need ready access to essential information and guidance in a compact form.

Pocket Prescriber also contains the most important reminder that doctors must not act beyond their knowledge or competence and should seek advice of senior colleagues whenever clinical circumstances require them to do so.

Professor Dame Carol Black, Past-President of the Royal College of Physicians

About the PDA version
We are delighted that the Pocket Prescriber will also now be available in a portable electronic version. The new PDA version of the Pocket Prescriber is timely as increasing numbers of prescribers have access to hand-held devices suitable for use of electronic guides.

Tim Nicholson, Institute of Psychiatry, London (Author)

About the PDA version
An easily updated PDA format is particular helpful for learning about prescribing, as clinical use of medicines is constantly evolving.
