Arrival City Summary

Arrival City: How the Largest Migration in History is Reshaping Our World by Doug Saunders

* A third of the world's people are in the midst of the largest population move in human history, as the last of the word's rural populations abandons agriculture and moves to the urban areas of the developing world and of the wealthy West.

This shift is at the heart of the most dangerous and violent conflicts today in North America, Europe and Asia. It also has enormous potential to renew the world's economies and bring a final end to mass poverty - if conflict and clashes can be avoided.

* It is taking place not in the cities we know but in a new type of space, on the margins of our great cities, that we rarely notice: the 'arrival city'. These spaces are becoming the power centres of the new era. It is from these, the new home of an enormous floating population of 2 billion people, that most of the world's most serious crises and explosions of violence are emerging

* In Arrival City - both a groundbreaking work of reportage and an exciting, vivid travelogue - award-winning journalist Doug Saunders offers a detailed tour of the key points in the Great Migration, and considers the actions that have turned this enormous population shift into either a success or a violent failure.

Arrival City Reviews

Doug Saunders is neither a glum pessimist nor a glib optimist and Arrival City will not please closed minds. But this provocative, disturbing, and exhilarating book is a delight for thoughtful readers. Indeed, it is essential. Migration is reshaping the world and, as Saunders demonstrates, the choices we make today will determine whether it brings prosperity or catastrophe tomorrow. * Dan Gardner, author of RISK: THE SCIENCE AND POLITICS OF FEAR *
'[an] important new book...[it] engages while remaining serious. It pulls in the reader by centring its storyline on the fate of its numerous lead characters...Doug Saunders's greatest strength lies in the global breadth of his reportage, which moves from the alleys of Mumbai to the soulless banlieues of Paris with the urgency of an international spy thriller. His evocative descriptions of open sewers, precarious dwellings, dark, dangerous spaces, noisy slum factories and the indomitable spirit of humanity transform a complex, serious subject into a page-turning read.' * Literary Review *
'Saunders's approach is through anecdotes and vignettes, but he has done his legwork so they cumulate into a persuasive whole. He integrates two hitherto distinct areas of policy concern: immigration into Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development countries, and the development of poor countries. Saunders' practical suggestions for helping immigrants to the OECD are sure to attract attention...[a] highly readable book.' * FT *
'[Saunders] book not only ranks as one of the year's most engaging and important works of non-fiction. It gives a vital resource to everyone who wants to learn about the pursuit of the public good in an era of challenged or enfeebled nation-states. With sharply written case-studies from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro to the banlieues of Paris and the so-called slums of Mumbai, Saunders shows that the arrival city of informal communities, where migrants from rural hinterlands to urban centres gather, presents not simply one of the world's most pressing problems. It also offers us the most promising solutions.' * Independent *
[a] provocative new book...Arrival City addresses the great neglected trend of the 21st century: urbanisation. Travelling across the globe, from Rio de Janeiro's favelas to Nairobi's slums and Berlin's Turkish enclave, Saunders weaves the tales of individual migrants through his vast story, that of the current, final great human movement - involving a third of our species - from the countryside to the city....A powerful work. * Evening Standard *
