The pig, Wilbur, runt of his litter, is saved from immediate slaughter by Fern, the farmer's daughter. But Wilbur soon learns that he will be killed in the end, for bacon. A grey spider named Charlotte, who lives in a corner of the barn, declares that she can save him from the butcher's knife.
