Homeless Bird Summary

Homeless Bird by Gloria Whelan

Koly's parents have arranged a marriage for their only daughter and now, like many girls her age in India, she will leave her home forever. She longs to run away, but she knows that she cannot go against tradition. On her wedding day, Koly's fate is sealed. Caught up in a series of events that threaten to sweep her towards a frightening future, Koly finds herself cast out and alone. But sometimes courage and hope can be more powerful than tradition, and Koly learns that fate can be taken into her own hands.

Homeless Bird Reviews

This novel ran a serious risk of degenerating into didacticism and of patronising the poor of the subcontinent. Whelan avoids these twin traps by writing with genuine compassion and insight and by maintaining with great integrity the unclutteres structure of her narrative. Ibby Link It is an enchanting story that evokes a strong sense of place in a world so detached from our own. INIS Not just a straightforward story of a forced marriage. It is a sinister story of deceit, swindling abd abandonment seen through the eyes of Koly. It is not only the storyline that holds the reader's interest. We learn of the rituals of a marriage ceremony, of worship in Hindu temples and of funeral rites. A strong story with appeal to 12-14s interested in Asian culture. School Librarian Sympathetic but never patronising, Whelan's vibrant telling poignantly evokes India's contrasting beauty and deprivation. Memorable absorbing and deeply affecting, it is a highly recommended read. Carousel
