In 16th-century-Prague two rabbis craft an artificial human, or golem, to secure the Emperor's protection for the city's Jewish population. In the present, a scientist who has discovered how to create life from inorganic matter finds his disastrous personal life is about to get worse.

Victor Werker is a Dutch scientist of international repute, creator of the 'eobiont', a form of life born from inorganic matter, using a DNA modelling technique. Werker's personal life is a disaster, but when he intercepts a secret communication between a contract killer and the killer's employer, his situation becomes far, far worse.
Harry Mulisch is the author of numerous novels, including LAST CALL, THE DISCOVERY OF HEAVEN and THE ASSAULT. The last of these was made into an Oscar-winning film. Harry Mulisch has also written essays, poetry, short stories, plays and philosophical works. He lives in Holland.
