The History of the "Times" Summary

The History of the "Times": v. 6: The Thomson Years, 1966-81 by John Grigg

This volume of "The Times" newspaper covers a dramatic period in the life of "The Times" - the ownership of Canadian entrepreneur Roy Thomson and the editorship of William Rees-Mogg. It was a period of great and decisive change in the world, Vietnam, the Cold War and the Moon landings, followed by the oil crisis of 1973 and the economic turmoil of the 1970s. It was also a period of upheaval and disruption at the newspaper itself as it struggled with an increasingly disruptive labour force, a process that climaxed with the yearlong closure of the paper in 1978 and, ultimately, its take-over in 1981 by Rupert Murdoch.
