The Thieves of Pudding Lane Summary

The Thieves of Pudding Lane: A story of the Great Fire of London by Jonathan Eyers

Gripping historical adventure set during the Great Fire of London. A young boy orphaned by the Plague learns to survive as a thief on the streets of London - until fire breaks out... London, 1666. Orphaned by the Great Plague, Sam is soon starving on the streets - and desperate enough to steal some bread. He's quickly recruited as one of sinister Uncle Jack's children, and taught to pick pockets. If he gets caught by the law, the punishment will be death - and if he crosses Uncle Jack, it could be just as bad. Still, it's a living for Sam and his fellow thief Catherine... until the long, hot London summer means a blaze at the Pudding Lane bakery runs out of control... and they learn that Uncle Jack's schemes are far more evil than they knew. Running for their lives from thiefmasters, thieftakers and the Great Fire of London itself, can two reluctant criminals save an innocent life - and their own skins?

The Thieves of Pudding Lane Reviews

This exciting adventure winds through the atmospheric streets of London and provides an excellent read with an authentic period setting. -- Sarah Brew * Parents in Touch *
Shades of Oliver Twist and Fagin come to mind when reading this exciting story of a boy, orphaned by the Plague in the London of 1666. However, this is no copycat story but a well-written book with good historical detail. This is a well-known story but Jonathan Eyers breathes new life into the spread of the fire and ensuing panic. It would be perfect for reading aloud to children who may be studying the Great Fire in KS1. The cover is arresting...so will hopefully draw readers in and let them read a really good novel about one of the most famous events in English History. -- Janet Fisher, Children's Literature Consultant * Books for Keeps *
This is a pacey, atmospheric story full of heart stopping moments. It is so vividly told, you almost feel yourself choking on the smoke as you read it. * Primary Times magazine *
This is an exciting action story...set amid the terrors of the Great Fire of London...The book evokes a truthful picture of that terrible event...the story is very well written, full of dialogue, intense action and it shows the best of human love as Samuel and Catherine care for the naive Gideon. * Historical Novel Society *
