This undergraduate textbook is a guide to the scope and content of environmental hydrology. It puts hydrology into its modern environmental context in which the measurements made and the conclusions drawn by hydrology are the focus for management by conservationists, pollution control agencies, and the water industry.

Hydrology and the River Environment Summary

Hydrology and the River Environment by Malcolm Newson (Professor of Physical Geography, Professor of Physical Geography, University of Newcastle upon Tyne)

BL A practical teaching course BL Takes an environmental approach to hydrology This is a textbook in environmental hydrology-a field of study concerned with the basic system of water circulation and patters of runoff and the major ways in which human occupation of Earth alters both processes and pattersn. It focuses on the river basin or catchment unit not only because of its geographical appeal but because it is the basic experimental and data-gathering unit, and the fundamental unit for water management. The book explores a considerable number of methodological frameworks. Most of these are scientific; an acceptable replacement for problem-solving by data collection, analysis, and prediction has yet to be found. However, it also considers non-digital values-attitudes, preferences, policies, laws-especially in the case of the freshwater environment, where key data are still relatively scarce. Having developed a holistic approach to river basins, the author concludes by considering the utility of our current knowledge of environment hydrology to provide the reader with a practical response to the conservation of fresh water.

`This is an excellent text for first year work and provides important background to final year work.' J. Sinclair, Nene College, Northampton
`well illustrated and structured. A useful introduction to a broad range of issues' Dr T.A.S. Bowyer-Bower, SOAS
`The book is a good introductory text for undergraduate work. It's strength is that it covers a large range of environmental aspects.' J.W. Lloyd, University of Birmingham
`This book provides a comprehensive overview of the hydrological cycle and is particularly applied to the river and its catchment area.' Mr Sinclair Buchan, University College of North Wales
`A very useful first level text that takes hydrology beyond the confines of a pure science.' Dr A.S. Tricker, University of Dundee
`An excellent, very readable and useful text ... should prove popular with students.' Peter Sims, University of Plymouth
`An excellent text.' M.R. Bristow, University of Manchester
`A refreshingly different approach to a vast area of knowledge. Highly original illustrations provide stimulating reinforcement of the ideas being described.' Dr M.J. Crick, University of Hertfordshire
`Useful well-illustrated and up-to-date text.' Dr Howard R. Fox, University of Derby
`Very clearly written and excellent illustrations. Major strengths - Integration of theory and application, attention to contemporary issues such as flood hazard and pollution.' Donald A. Thompson, Royal Hollway, University of London
`Throughout the book the style is lucid and the diagrams are of a particularly high quality. There is also a refreshingly good range of examples drawn from the UK situation, backed up with detailed maps, tables and diagrams ... a useful companion text to the numerous basic studies of hydrology which concentrate more on the purely scientific and engineering aspects of the subject.'
