Summary

Which lyric writer perpetrated the immortal line 'Every pedagogue goes to bed agog'? Which Hollywood mogul, on reaching the age of 104, remarked: 'If I'd known I was going to live so long I'd have taken better care of myself'? This work provides answers to these and many other anecdotal gems, witty or malicious putdowns, and potted biographies.

Voices from the Wings Summary

Voices from the Wings: A Connoisseur's Collection of Great Theatrical and Showbiz Anecdotes by Ned Sherrin

Which lyric writer perpetrated the immortal line 'Every pedagogue goes to bed agog'? Which Hollywood actress was told by an even more famous British one that she was 'so sane for a movie star'? Which Hollywood mogul, on reaching the age of 104, remarked: 'If I'd known I was going to live so long I'd have taken better care of myself'? Answers within, and these are only three among the literally thousands of anecdotal gems, witty or malicious putdowns, potted biographies or caustic one-liners collected and collated by that master of the revealing anecdote and connoisseur of theatrical lore in all its forms, Ned Sherrin. Here is a very personal choice, saying much about its author's own tastes as well as his subjects' quirky and remarkable lives. Lovers of showbiz in all its forms, from theatre to television and musicals to operetta, will welcome this new edition of a much-admired work, now extensively revised and enlarged. Rogues, vagabonds, stage-door johnnies and ardent first-nighters, plunge in and enjoy! It is entertaining, wide-ranging, definitive, and suitable for all theatre and showbiz buffs. It includes much fresh, first-hand material. The author is renowned anecdotalist, wit and authority. This is a greatly expanded and revised edition of his long-out-of-print earlier book.

About Ned Sherrin

Educated at Oxford, Ned Sherrin was originally intended for the bar, but fainted in front of the judge in the course of a mock trial and turned instead to showbiz. After early experience with both the BBC and ITV, he achieved his first big breakthrough with the launch of That Was the Week That Was ("TW3") in November 1962. He has been film producer (The Virgin Soldiers), theatrical director (Mr and Mrs Nobody and Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell), and director/presenter of Side by Side by Sondheim. A sparkling raconteur and after-dinner speaker, he is known nationwide as presenter over many years of Radio 4's Loose Ends and Counterpoint.
