Centres on the 16th-century alchemist and astrologer John Dee. Reputedly a black magician, imprisoned by Queen Mary for allegedly attempting to kill her through sorcery, Dr Dee was also one of the great philosophers and mathematicians of his age and believed in communicating with spirits.
