Titian and His World Summary

Titian and His World by Peter Humfrey

Venetian painting of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries was extraordinarily rich in talent, and Titian's older and younger contemporaries included painters of the stature of Bellini, Giorgione, Bassano, Tintoretto and Veronese. Published to accompany the major exhibition The Age of Titian, this book examines twenty of the most important paintings included in the show. It also traces the development of Venetian painting from about 1460 to 1615 and provides the background to the opulence and sensuousness of Venetian painting.

About Peter Humfrey

Peter Humfrey, guest curator of the exhibition, is Professor of Art History at the University of St Andrews and a widely recognised authority on Venetian Renaissance art. His books include Cima da Conegliano (1983), The Altarpiece in Renaisssance Venice (1993), and Painting in Renaissance Venice (1995). He was also co-author of the catalogues of two major international loan exhibitions: Lorenzo Lotto (Washington, Bergamo and Paris, 1997-8); and Dosso Dossi (Ferrara, New York and Los Angeles, 1998-9).
