The work is based on Philippa Davenport's cookery column in "Country Living" magazine. She aims to guide the reader through the seasons, pointing out the best produce that each season has to offer. Interwoven with the recipes are anecdotes on life in and around the country kitchen, describing the informality of summer entertaining and the autumnal expeditions to find free gifts of the countryside - sloes, elderberries, rosehips and hazelnuts. Philippa Davenport was formerly cookery contributor to the "Financial Times" and cookery correspondent of the "London Evening Standard" and "Brides" magazine.
