The Shackleton Voyages Summary

The Shackleton Voyages: A pictorial anthology of the polar explorer and Edwardian hero by Roland Huntford

Ernest Shackleton is best known for his ENDURANCE expedition, but he took part in four Antarctic expeditions in all - the DISCOVERY (1902-4), the NIMROD expedition (1907-9), the ENDURANCE - AURORA expedition (1914-17) and QUEST, his final journey in 1921. Roland Huntford looks at Shackleton, the explorer and leader of men, the hero of his day, who was knighted by King Edward VII. This is a riveting story in words and pictures of rivalry, survival, comradeship and courage in the face of danger and hardship. Includes 100 photographs not published before, including Shackleton's own, and from personal archives in the UK, New Zealand & Australia.

The Shackleton Voyages Reviews

Julie Summers (the picture researcher) will be doing two events about Shackleton in the new year and was also a judge at the Kendel Mountain Film Festival. Roland has also been interviewed on BBCRadio Solent, BBC Radio Guernsey, BBC Radio Shropshire, BBC Radio Bristol and BBC Hereford & Worcester as well as Teletext. The first review has beenwonderful... 'Huntford's Shackleton Voyages condenses the author's wonderfuland definitive 1985 biography into a photographic anthology celebrating not just the most famous journey but the entire career...The photographs alone, informatively captioned by Julie Summers, summarise the tale from its beginnings with the boy who signed up for the navy at 16 to its end at a little stonecairn on a promontory of South Georgia, where he died of a heart attack at the age of 49...But the delight of this volume is that it invites its readers not only to gaze awestruck at the grandeur, but offers an insight into the life of an explorer.'Rachel Campbell-Johnston, The Times 'There's nothing quiteas fascinating as a charismatic hero...and Julie Summers' selection of pictures goes far in furthering the myth. Added to that, we have his diary extracts and letters allowing us to go beneath the surface to discover the man. And you can't help being impressed by what you find...Roland Huntford's text is informed and accessible...the book provides a fascinating insight into the explorer. It's beautifully produced and the numerous photographs provide us witha glimpse not only of the hardships and excitement of the voyages, but the personalities and lives of many who were involced.'OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHY There have also been reviews/mentions in Geographical, Wanderlust, the Daily Expressand Wanderlust with more expected in the Evening Standard, Daily Mail and Mai
