Virtues and Reasons Summary

Virtues and Reasons: Philippa Foot and Moral Theory: Essays in Honour of Philippa Foot by Rosalind Hursthouse (Senior Lecturer in Philosophy, Senior Lecturer in Philosophy, The Open University)

Philippa Foot is one of the most original and widely respected philosophers of recent years; her work has exerted a lasting influence on the development of moral philosophy. In tribute to her, twelve eminent philosophers from both sides of the Atlantic offer essays exploring the various topics in moral philosophy to which she has made a distinctive contribution. There are chapters on virtue ethics, naturalism, non-cognitivism, relativism, categorical requirements, and the role of rationality in morality. Virtues and Reasons offers at the same time an impressive demonstration of Professor Foot's continuing influence, and a selection of outstanding work in contemporary moral philosophy. 'to be welcomed for more reasons than one. Most obviously, it is fitting that Foot's salutary influence on moral theory should be celebrated by such a fine set of papers . . . [they] have much to offer' Michael Smith, Times Literary Supplement

Virtues and Reasons Reviews

A short review cannot hope to do justice to all the interesting (and controversial) material to be found in these dedicatory essays. * Michael Slote, Philosophical Quarterly *
To be welcomed for more reasons than one. Most obviously, it is fitting that Foot's salutary influence on moral theory should be celebrated by such a fine set of papers ... the papers in the volume have much to offer. * Times Literary Supplement *
The twelve contributors include many distinguished philosphers; their varied contributions go to a set of themes distilled in Foot's own collection Virtues and Vices ... still a great pleasure to read, with its unfailing clear-headedness, its harmony of conviction and modesty, and the honest and unfussy directness of its arguments. Moreover, it is still philosophically instructive and provocative; as the essays in this Festschrift show. * Margaret Urban Walker, Fordham University, International Philosophical Quarterly, Vol. XXXVII, No.2, Issue No. 146, June 1997 *
