About Stephen Olvey

Dr Stephen Olvey is Medical Director of the new Grand Prix Masters series. Prior to this he was Medical Director for Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) in the USA, having served in that position from 1978 to 2003. In this capacity he helped save Alex Zanardi's life - hence Alex's foreword to the book.

The author's 'debut' as a medic at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1966, where his first on-track rescue involved Graham Hill in his 'rookie' year in the Indy 500. Working with the greats of US racing; AJ Foyt, Mario Andretti, Johnny Rutherford, Rick Mears, Al Unser Jr and Emerson Fittipaldi. Nigel Mansell's remarkable, and at times controversial, two seasons in CART, and his return to racing in the Grand Prix Masters championship. The story of Alex Zanardi's horrific crash in 2001 and how his life was saved thanks to rapid intervention. The advances in motorsport safety and medicine made through the experience and persistence of the author and his peers, including his friend and colleague Prof Sid Watkins.
