About Steven Runciman

Steven Runciman was born in 1903 and studied at Trinity College, Cambridge before becoming a Fellow and a lecturer there. In 1938, having come into a considerable fortune on his grandfather's death, he resigned his Fellowship at Trinity to devote his time to writing. Byzantine Civilization, published in 1933, was to make his name whilst his great series A History of the Crusades, published in 1951, 1952 and 1954, made him famous. He died in 2000
