Roithamer, a Wittgenstein-like character, is driven mad by his own frightening powers of pure thought, and commits suicide. The story traces the breakdown of a genius ceaselessly compelled to correct and refine his perceptions. Bernhard's awards included the Bremen Prize and Le Prix Seguier.
