Monasteries of Western Europe: The Architecture of the Orders by Wolfgang Braunfels
When it was first published, Professor Braunfels' book at once established itself as definitive. For this edition he revised the text and added a new chapter on the cathedral-monasteries of England. After tracing the beginning of monasticism in the West, the narrative details the tradition of building for religious orders from St Gall to Le Corbusier's La Tourette. An appendix gives the religious rules which dictated the form of monasteries.
