The First World War was one of the largest wars in history, drawing in many of the world’s great economic powers. Two opposing alliances were formed, with the Allies consisting of Britain, France, Italy, Japan and the Russian Empire fighting the Central Powers of Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria. The four-year war resulted in over 38 million casualties and is ranked as one of the deadliest conflicts in human history.
