Jahrhundert in ein spirituelles System integriert und Gehorsam gegenuber Geistlichen Vatern heilsnotwendig wurde. Dabei analysiert er einen ursprunglich fur Monche verfassten Text, die Klimax des Johannes Sinaites. Diese interpretiert er zum ersten Mal aus ihrer konkreten Entstehungssituation heraus, auch unter sozialgeschichtlichen Fragestellungen. Johannes bot demnach mit seinem geistlichen Handbuch einen Gegenentwurf zu Autoritatskonzepten in der Gesetzgebung des Kaisers Justinian. Dieser hatte versucht, das Monchtum hierarchisch-institutionell zu organisieren. Ein Vergleich des Gehorsamskonzeptes der Klimax mit denen bei Pachomios, Basileios dem Grossen und den Apophthegmata Patrum profiliert den Ansatz des Sinaiten. Dieser Ansatz hat letztlich uber seine ursprungliche Adressatengruppe des Monchtums hinaus eine breite Rezeption erfahren.
