Today the only member of the great succession of European Old Masters who was a woman, Artemisia Gentileschi was not an admired, canonical painter when Banti decided to make her the principal character in a novel which cannot be subsumed under the conventional categories of historical novel or fictional biography. Comparable in its intensity with such one-of-a-kind masterpieces as Virginia Woolf's Orlando, Marguerite Yourcenar's The Memoirs of Hadrian, Penelope Fitzgerald's The Blue Flower, and Leonid Tsypkin's Summer in Baden-Baden, Artemisia is a masterly, provocative account of creativity and the condition of being a woman.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49510967476497,"sku":"GOR001306009","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1852425040.jpg?v=1750964087"},{"product_id":"artemisia-book-anna-banti-9781913109004","title":"Artemisia","description":"Artemisia Gentileschi was an Italian Baroque painter, today considered one of the most accomplished painters in the generation following that of Caravaggio.Much in Gentileschi's life marked her out as a victim - rape at the age of 18, a forced marriage to a man she did not love and, a powerful, patriarchal father.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49548844171537,"sku":"GOR010524467","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49748384219409,"sku":"NGR9781913109004","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50520266866961,"sku":"GOR010679534","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52691175899409,"sku":"NLS9781913109004","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53190290964753,"sku":"GOR011336860","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1913109003.jpg?v=1751380683"},{"product_id":"artemisia-book-anna-banti-9788845250996","title":"Artemisia","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49572181967121,"sku":"GOR002402429","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50299003863313,"sku":"GOR009774102","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50404330242321,"sku":"CIN8845250997A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50440656978193,"sku":"CIN8845250997VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51745782399249,"sku":"GOR003606321","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/8845250997.jpg?v=1751159800"},{"product_id":"artemisia-book-anna-banti-9781852427665","title":"Artemisia","description":"First published in 1953, Artemisia immediately established itself as a classic. At the centre of the book is Artemisia Gentileschi, a painter influenced by Michelangelo and Caravaggio. A rising star in 17th-century Naples, Artemisia realises that success has been bought at too high a price ? she has failed as a woman, a wife and a mother. The closer the author, Anna Banti, gets to her subject, the more she is forced to reflect on the condition of women today and on her own life in German-occupied Italy. Anna Banti?s Artemisia is an important reflection on art, femininity and the creative experience. Translated by Shirley D?Ardia Caracciolo and now with an Introduction by acclaimed feminist critic Susan Sontag.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49584206709009,"sku":"GOR001802392","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49651707445521,"sku":"GOR003955790","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50513663590673,"sku":"GOR001752220","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1852427663.jpg?v=1751412320"},{"product_id":"artemisia-book-anna-banti-9780803262133","title":"Artemisia","description":"Artemisia Gentileschi, born in 1598, the daughter of an esteemed painter, taught art in Naples and painted the great women of Roman and biblical history. She could neither read nor write, and she was the reviled victim in a public rape trial, rejected by her father, and later abandoned by her husband. Nevertheless, she was one of the first women in modern times to uphold through her work and deeds the right of women to pursue careers compatible with their talents and on an equal footing with men. This edition features a new introduction by the celebrated critic and writer Susan Sontag. Anna Banti, the pen name of Lucia Lopresti, was born in Florence in 1895. Trained as an art historian, she turned to novels, stories, and autobiographical prose in the 1930s. Artemisia, her second novel, published in 1947, is the most acclaimed of the sixteen works of fiction she published during her long life, and is considered a classic of twentieth century Italian literature. Her last, harrowingly confessional novel, A Piercing Cry (Un grido lacerante), appeared in 1981. Banti also wrote art criticism and monographs on painters (Lorenzo Lotto, Fra Angelico, Vel zquez, Monet), literary criticism and film reviews, and translated novels by Thackery, Colette, Alain Fournier, and Virginia Woolf. She died in Ronchi di Massa (Tuscanny) in 1985. The translator, Shirley D'Ardia Caracciolo, whose afterword discusses the historical background and artistry of Artemisia, lives in Ireland. Susan Sontag's books include The Benefactor and Against Interpretation and Other Essays.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49731615392017,"sku":"NGR9780803262133","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50038255976721,"sku":"CIN0803262132A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50248908701969,"sku":"GOR006716661","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50366449156369,"sku":"CIN0803262132G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51007242993937,"sku":"NIN9780803262133","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51549706715409,"sku":"CIN0803262132VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0803262132.jpg?v=1761386569"},{"product_id":"artemisia-book-anna-banti-9780803261198","title":"Artemisia","description":"Artemisia Gentileschi, born in 1598, the daughter of an esteemed painter, taught art in Naples and painted the great women of Roman and biblical history.
