The author wrote Through the Looking Glass: British Foreign Policy in the Age of Illusions. Sir Francis Younghusband was a recluse from society, born in 1863 and trained to play the Great Game - the war of wits waged between British and Russian agents for mastery of the territories north of British India. Under the flag of the Empire, Younghusband was given the opportunity to follow his expansionist tendencies and spiritual yearnings into the desolate and mountainous regions of Central Asia. His adventure in China and the Pamirs were extraordinary. Defying orders from both the British and Indian governments, he insisted that wherever he went, British power should follow. He was determined to force Tibet to show allegiance to his Queen-Empress and fought his way through to Lhasa in 1904 using the deadly Maxim gun against soldiers who were, to all intents and purposes, unarmed. The slaughter was terrible and its justification untenable. Younghusband's contemporaries found him unfathomable and historians have always found him an enigma but, working from his letters and diaries, Anthony Verrier reveals the motives which lay behind Younghusband's extremes of foolhardy exploration and his rash intelligence operations which led to his fall from grace.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49545721250065,"sku":"GOR005886934","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52108676038929,"sku":"GOR004670035","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53567795855633,"sku":"GOR005151308","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0224025058.jpg?v=1751037463"},{"product_id":"assassination-in-algiers-book-anthony-verrier-9780333414408","title":"Assassination in Algiers","description":"A British historian, using new-found source material, tells for the first time the full story of a pivotal episode in World War II. On Christmas Ever, 1942, 21-year-old Fernand Bonnier fired two shots into the stomach of Jean-Francois Darlan, the Vichy leader in North Africa. Two hours later Admiral Darlan died. The assassin was shot after a court-martial in Algiers. Behind this assissination was a complex and tangled story which Anthony Verrier has tried to unravel using British and American secret service papers and interviews with informed British and French respondents to compensate for the lack of officially available documents.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49566926110993,"sku":"GOR003975174","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49608105689361,"sku":"GOR003300671","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0333414403.jpg?v=1750877479"},{"product_id":"through-the-looking-glass-book-anthony-verrier-9780224019798","title":"Through the Looking Glass","description":"The Falklands Islands crisis emphasizes the continuing dilemma over Britain's role in international politics. In November 1942 Anthony Eden, as Foreign Secretary in Britain's wartime coalition cabinet, declared: 'I assume that the aim of British policy must be first, that we should continue to exercise the functions of a world power.' This is a stance which has frequently forced Whitehall to tell governments of the difference between illusion and reality. Winston Churchill was a statesman who did grasp this difference, particularly in his relations with Josef Stalin and Franklin Roosevelt. Ernest Bevin was another realist who sought American backing for the containment of Russia in Europe and the maintenance of Britain's position in the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. Anthony Verrier has selected six major post-war episodes to describe what British governments do when the desire to remain a world power is not matched by the resources necessary to be one. Verrier reveals fully for the first time the crucial role of the Secrte Intelligence Service in the execution of British foreign policy: in the air and sea landing in Albania organized by the CIA and the SIS - an operation which it is now known Philby betrayed to his Soviet control; in the debacle of Suez;in the Kuwait operation July 1961 where Britain strove to demonstrate that it 'still counted' in the Middle East; in Nigeria; in the Cuban missile crisis when Kennedy received crucial information from the SIS's Soviet informer, Oleg Penowsky, which he needed to read Krushchev's hand and call his bluff, and in the abiding disaster of Northern Ireland. Verrier shows conclusively that this role was far more important than those who have both fantasized and derided the SIS ever realized. This is not the world of James Bond or George Smiley though every bit as complex and extraordinary. This is the real orld and the SIS emerges as an organization which adjusted far more rapidly to the realities of power in the post-war world than its political masters. Through the Looking Glass is based primarily on interviews with participants in the six episodes and, to a degree, on the author's own experience. The reader is offered a cautionary tale, directly relevant to the increasingly dangerous world of the 1980s.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49609432301841,"sku":"GOR002552803","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53549097648401,"sku":"GOR005295230","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0224019791.jpg?v=1750780494"},{"product_id":"bomber-offensive-book-anthony-verrier-9780330238649","title":"Bomber Offensive","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49616129163537,"sku":"GOR000643481","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50103346561297,"sku":"GOR003618598","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52814299693329,"sku":"GOR002831528","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0330238647.jpg?v=1750910010"},{"product_id":"road-to-zimbabwe-1890-1980-book-anthony-verrier-9780224021616","title":"The Road to Zimbabwe, 1890-1980","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49724869509393,"sku":"GOR013772361","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50429384720657,"sku":"GOR001750659","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50880334725393,"sku":"GOR004065333","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0224021613.jpg?v=1750908932"},{"product_id":"assassination-in-algiers-cl-book-anthony-verrier-9780393028287","title":"ASSASSINATION IN ALGIERS CL","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50351849832721,"sku":"CIN0393028283A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50351852192017,"sku":"CIN0393028283G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53651796787473,"sku":"CIN0393028283VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0393028283.jpg?v=1750739795"},{"product_id":"the-bomber-offensive-rare-book-anthony-verrier-1730974593lee","title":"The Bomber Offensive","description":"1968.
