Yeats as the two most influential figures in twentieth century Irish poetry. Kavanagh was born in Co. Monaghan, the son of a cobbler-cum-small farmer. He left school at thirteen but continued to educate himself, reading and writing poetry in his spare time. In 1929 he began contributing verses to the Irish Statesman and was soon publishing in Irish and English journals. His first collection, Ploughman and Other Poems, appeared in 1936 and was followed by an autobiography, The Green Fool, in 1938. In 1939 he moved to Dublin where he spent the rest of his life as a freelance writer. He first emerged as an important literary voice with his long poem, The Great Hunger, in 1942. Other collections appeared in the following decade to growing critical acclaim. Kavanagh's work was his life, but he was also part of social and literary Dublin for almost thirty years in the company of a gifted generation of writers, among them Flann O'Brien and Brendan Behan. His position in the history of Irish poetry is secure. Antoinette Quinn's biography will be the standard life for many years to come.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49539535667473,"sku":"GOR008652595","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49592582930705,"sku":"GOR002010919","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50423343284497,"sku":"GOR007263499","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/071712651X.jpg?v=1751199422"},{"product_id":"dancing-with-kitty-stobling-book-antoinette-quinn-9781843510451","title":"Dancing With Kitty Stobling","description":"Patrick Kavanagh exhorted his audience to ‘Come Dance with Kitty Stobling’, where he envisioned his ‘rhyme \/ Cavorting on mile-high stilts’ across the ‘colourful country’ to the amazement of earthbound onlookers. Kitty Stobling was his zany, carefree muse, leading him on to indulge his spirits in high jinks. In Dancing with Kitty Stobling, the thirty-two winners of the award instituted in Patrick Kavanagh’s honour respond to his challenge, creating a joyous celebration of the centenary of his birth. Ireland’s longest-running award for a first collection of poems, the Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Award reveals the thematic variety and stylistic eclecticism of its winners. Each contributor has selected five pages of their own work, allowing readers a rare insight into the poets’ personal preferences. Some – including Roz Cowman, Thomas McCarthy, Aidan Mathews and Eilean Ni Chuilleanain – have offered new, unpublished work. Encompassing voices as diverse as Pat Boran, Celia de Freine, Paul Durcan, Sinead Morrissey, Peter Sirr and Joseph Woods, Dancing with Kitty Stobling is a mosaic of some of Ireland’s very best poetry.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49561785205009,"sku":"GOR003531670","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50560828702993,"sku":"GOR010616106","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1843510456.jpg?v=1751026786"},{"product_id":"patrick-kavanagh-book-antoinette-quinn-9780717136438","title":"Patrick Kavanagh","description":"The first paperback edition of the critically acclaimed biography, described by one reviewer as 'a magnificent work of love and scholarship...the best biography I have read in years'.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49660566143249,"sku":"GOR001455182","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50097902977297,"sku":"CIN0717136434G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50442143924497,"sku":"GOR005679378","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0717136434.jpg?v=1751295470"},{"product_id":"patrick-kavanagh-book-antoinette-quinn-9780717121144","title":"Patrick Kavanagh","description":"Antoinette Quinn's study of Kavanagh combines straightforward evaluation of his work with an informed contextual analysis.
