For centuries, Western art was tied to the discipline of the Roman Catholic Church. Symbolic birds appeared in many renaissance religious paintings. Delicate preparatory water-colour sketches were made for these. Artists who wished to paint birds, shrewdly chose scenes of the animals entering Noah's Ark and the Garden of Eden, which gave them the legitimate excuse to introduce birds. By the end of the sixteenth century, the artists had altered the balance and relegated the biblical scene to the background, with the birds claiming full attention in the foreground. In the mid-seventeenth century they were free of clerical demands and in the Golden Age of Dutch and Flemish painting they produced hundreds of very fine canvases full of delightful birds. At long last, they could fully indulge their delight in painting the beauty of colour and form of the birds that gave them so much pleasure. Further volumes in the series, covering the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and oriental bird painting, will develop the theme of great bird painting through the ages, tracing its evolution towards the excellence of today's bird art. The author is an Associate of the Library Association, who has worked as the College Librarian, Mander College, Bedford, and the County Branch Librarian at Radlett, Hertfordshire. She has lectured on local history and bird illustrations, has written six books on birds, numerous articles for various natural history and ornithological publications and local history pamphlets.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49531636547857,"sku":"GOR002239092","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50226389287185,"sku":"GOR005509064","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1851491783.jpg?v=1751437876"},{"product_id":"great-bird-paintings-of-the-world-book-christine-e-jackson-9781851491995","title":"Great Bird Paintings of the World","description":"This is the second part of a five-volume series. This book presents a representative selection of colour pictures of birds painted during the 18th century. It portrays the artists' increasing sensitivity to nature. A detailed text accompanies the pictures and reveals the growth in the popularity of watercolour as a medium for painting birds. In the 18th century, several artists continued to produce bird paintings in the same style and composition of the Old Masters. When a new sensitivity to nature became universal, naturalists recorded, named and illustrated species with increasing skills. Old myths were replaced by observation and evidence. Exotic birds were being discovered in the newly-explored countries of North America, India and, at the end of the century, Australia. This age of discovery was also a period when the potential of watercolour painting was developed and proved to be the perfect medium for depicting birds. In bird art, as in so many other aspects of 18th century life, this was an age of sense and sensitivity.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49537299349777,"sku":"GOR004555389","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51699604521233,"sku":"GOR004762298","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1851491996.jpg?v=1751155011"},{"product_id":"collecting-bird-stamps-book-christine-e-jackson-9780854931262","title":"Collecting Bird Stamps","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49650614731025,"sku":"GOR004313077","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49653470953745,"sku":"GOR004308675","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50460174418193,"sku":"GOR001964462","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0854931260.jpg?v=1751396441"},{"product_id":"fish-in-art-book-christine-e-jackson-9781861898999","title":"Fish in Art","description":"Featuring more than 200 illustrations, with 180 in colour, Fish in Art examines the evolution of fish representation from 2000BC to the present day.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49662461673745,"sku":"GOR013507345","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53683841630481,"sku":"GOR010359084","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1861898991.jpg?v=1751413095"},{"product_id":"newsworthy-naturalist-book-christine-e-jackson-9781913679040","title":"A Newsworthy Naturalist","description":"William Yarrell (1784-1856) was an influential naturalist at a time when natural history was becoming an important factor in 19th century society. He wrote two notable books: A History of British Fishes and A History of British Birds, that were being quoted as the authorities well into the next century and are still admired today, especially for their delightful wood engravings. He was a member and sometime Treasurer, Secretary and Vice-President of the Zoological, Linnean and Entomological Societies. He was known to, and greatly admired by, the leading naturalists; Charles Darwin sought Yarrell's advice on several occasions. In addition to his key role as an organiser and disseminator of knowledge about the British fish and bird fauna, Yarrell also conducted significant original scientific research, being perhaps best known as the first person to recognise Bewick's Swan as a separate species from the Whooper Swan, naming it Cygnus bewickii after his illustrious ornithological predecessor.  Yarrell owned the London newsagency, Jones and Yarrell, with his partner, Edward Jones, from 1803 until 1850. They held a royal warrant and supplied the Houses of Parliament as well as royalty with newspapers.  Besides his work on natural history and running the newsagency, he was a popular figure with his friends, renowned for the good food and wine served at his convivial dinner parties, and he was a prolific correspondent.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49666123432209,"sku":"GOR013621280","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49741495730449,"sku":"NGR9781913679040","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1913679047.jpg?v=1751028413"},{"product_id":"peacock-book-christine-e-jackson-9781861892935","title":"Peacock","description":"People in most countries are familiar with the blue peacock. It is one of the very few bird species that will tolerate a person standing within a few feet of it, and appears to appreciate an audience when it unfurls its magnificent train into a 6 7-foot arc of glittering iridescent feathers. The train feathers with their eye-spots have been prized possessions for centuries. The first record of a peacock in the Middle East, taken there from its homeland in the Indus Valley, was when King Solomon imported them c. 950 BC. The story of the peacock spread westwards and its impact on different countries is both surprising and fascinating. Peacocks became the subject of fairy stories, legends, fables, myths and superstitions. Images of peacocks have appeared in mosaics, frescoes, paintings from illuminated manuscripts through to modern graphics, and in the nineteenth century they represented opulence, luxury and vibrant beauty in the artefacts created by the Arts and Crafts, the Aesthetic and the Art Nouveau movements' craftsmen in glass, ceramics, metalwork, jewellery and other materials. The feathers of peacocks have been used in head-dresses, hats and helmets, to fletch arrows and to tie artificial flies for fishermen. This is the first book to bring together all the facets of the peacock including natural and social history, its role in religions and mythology in the East and West, and its place in the history of art and artefacts.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49975245209873,"sku":"GOR003065683","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50402318057745,"sku":"CIN1861892934G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1861892934.jpg?v=1751455539"},{"product_id":"sir-william-jardine-book-christine-e-jackson-9780718501648","title":"Sir William Jardine","description":"This biography of Sir William Jardine (1800-1874), the foremost Scottish naturalist of the 19th century, uses original source material (manuscripts, correspondence, etc.). His reputation rests on his drawings and etchings (largely of specimens from his own collection) for his \"Illustrations of British Ornithology\". This was only a small part of his contribution to the study of natural history. This is the first biography of P.J. Selby to be published. The book is based on a series of vivid and entertaining letters that Selby wrote to his close friend and collaborator, Sir William Jardine, between 1824 and 1856. As well as discussing Selby's contribution to science and his techniques as an artist, Mrs Jackson sketches the background of the Northumbrian countryside in which he spent his life, his love of his family and estate, his involvement in local politics and his interest in the building of the railways.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50738321555729,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50738322276625,"sku":"GOR002808710","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1871739268.jpg?v=1751124247"},{"product_id":"dictionary-of-bird-artists-of-the-world-book-christine-e-jackson-9781851492039","title":"A Dictionary of Bird Artists of the World","description":"This dictionary of bird artists contains biographical information with illustrations. Approximately 5000 artists, past and present, who have made two-dimensional portraits of birds as the main motif in their paintings are included in this dictionary, with their biographical details. Some artists painted large canvases filled with birds for an imaginary earthly paradise, while others made detailed studies of a single species. Many great masters painted a bird, and the specialist bird painters knew not only how to paint feathers, but also understood the birds' anatomical structure. These artists were given commissions to record newly-discovered species. The variety of their approach is illustrated in some 1000 colour and black and white plates. The introduction surveys varying aspects of bird portraiture by different cultures. The artists' biographies, arranged alphabetically, include comments on their individual style and achievements. A list of galleries where their work may be viewed is also included. An additional benefit of the Dictionary is that sales and auctions of bird paintings in both salerooms and galleries during the past ten years are listed, with the prices realized.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50840339382545,"sku":"GOR008510812","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51433066299665,"sku":"GOR009343915","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1851492038.jpg?v=1750865917"},{"product_id":"bird-etchings-book-christine-e-jackson-9780801496844","title":"Bird Etchings","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52946512642321,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52946512740625,"sku":"GOR007057305","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780801496844.jpg?v=1765987452"},{"product_id":"menageries-in-britain-1100-2000-book-christine-e-jackson-9780903874458","title":"Menageries in Britain 1100-2000","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53101680754961,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53101680853265,"sku":"GOR014740767","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780903874458.jpg?v=1770293852"},{"product_id":"going-to-heaven-book-christine-e-jackson-9798342211635","title":"Going to Heaven","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53220381229329,"sku":"GOR014812121","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53221604262161,"sku":"GOR014812955","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9798342211635.jpg?v=1772888684"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-au\/collections\/author-books-by-christine-e-jackson.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
