Born in Hull as Florence Margaret Smith, her family moved to Palmers Green in 1905, and she lived there until her death on 7 March 1971. After her death, a film starring Glenda Jackson and a play were written about her life, bringing widespread revival among her readers. This biography reveals a new side of Stevie Smith's character, and demonstrates that her solitude has been overstated: she was actively involved in the social as well as intellectual life of literary London. She began writing poetry in her twenties while working as secretary. Her first book, \"Novel on Yellow Paper\", was published in 1936 and drew heavily on her own life, examining the unrest in England during World War I. Until the last ten years of her life, she remained virtually unknown, when she was then awarded the Cholmondeley Award for Poetry, and the Queen's Gold Medal for poetry. This work reveals how the events of Stevie Smith's life had a profound effect on her poetry, and that her life and art formed a very intimate relationship.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49523298500881,"sku":"GOR001420593","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49540578214161,"sku":"GOR004966835","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":49799596212497,"sku":"CIN0750928603A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50362192789777,"sku":"CIN0750928603G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50747820212497,"sku":"GOR003184743","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0750928603.jpg?v=1750945401"},{"product_id":"bloomsbury-group-book-frances-spalding-9781855147232","title":"The Bloomsbury Group","description":"At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Bloomsbury Group transformed British culture with their innovative approach to art, design and society. Spalding sheds light on his love affairs with Lytton Strachey and Maynard Keynes, and on his tempestuous relationship with Vanessa Bell, with whom he lived at Charleston, and had a daughter, Angelica. Spalding also reassesses Grant's painting, setting it in the context of his fluctuating reputation, which dipped after World War II, but was followed by a revival of interest in his work by a younger audience in the late Sixties. He lived to be 93, his life spanning Victorian society and the modern day.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49527639376145,"sku":"GOR002707071","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50125949927697,"sku":"CIN0701134097A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50434133786897,"sku":"GOR001675068","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50730287694097,"sku":"GOR003398353","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51597199737105,"sku":"GOR012265567","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0701134097.jpg?v=1751433711"},{"product_id":"john-piper-myfanwy-piper-book-frances-spalding-9780199567614","title":"John Piper, Myfanwy Piper","description":"This book is about a shared journey made by John and Myfanwy Piper who early on settled down in a small hamlet on the edge of the Chilterns, whence they proceeded to produce work which placed them centre stage in the cultural landscape of the twentieth century. Here, too, they fed and entertained many visitors, among them Kenneth Clark, John Betjeman, Osbert Lancaster, Benjamin Britten, and the Queen Mother. Their creative partnership encompasses not only a long marriage and numerous private and professional vicissitudes, but also a genuine legacy of lasting achievements in the visual arts, literature and music. Frances Spalding also sheds new light on the story of British art in the 1930s. In the middle of this decade John Piper and Myfanwy Evans (they did not marry until 1937) were at the forefront of avant-garde activities in England, Myfanwy editing the most advanced art magazine of the day and John working alongside Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, and others. But as the decade progressed and the political situation in Europe worsened, they changed their allegiances, John Piper investigating in his art a sense of place, belonging, history, memory, and the nature of national identity, all issues that are very much to the fore in today's world. Myfanwy Piper is best known as 'Golden Myfanwy', Betjeman's muse and for her work as librettist with Benjamin Britten. John Piper was an extraordinarily prolific artist in many media, his fertile career stretching over six decades and involving him in many changes of style. Having been an abstract painter in the 1930s, he became best known for his landscapes and architectural scenes in a romantic style. This core interest, in the English and Welsh landscape and the built environment, developed in him a sensibility that took in almost everything, from gin palaces to painted quoins, from ruined cottages to country houses, from Victorian shop fronts to what is nowadays called industrial archeology. His capacious and divided sensibility made him defender of many aspects of the English landscape and the built environment, while in his art he became an heir of that great tradition encompassing Wordsworth and Blake, Turner, Ruskin, and Samuel Palmer. He was torn between the pleasures of an abstract language liberated from time and place and those embedded in the locale, in buildings, geography, and history. Today, this expansive contradictoriness seems quintessentially modern, his divided response finding an echo in our own ambivalence towards modernity. Both Pipers created what seemed to many observers an ideal way of life, involving children, friendships, good food, humour, the pleasures of a garden, work, and creativity. Running through their lives is a fertile tension between a commitment to the new and a desire to reinvigorate certain native traditions. This tension produced work that is passionate and experimental. 'Only those who live most vividly in the present', John Russell observed of John and Myfanwy Piper, 'deserve to inherit the past'.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49532191572241,"sku":"GOR003608474","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50111835308305,"sku":"GOR006246781","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50490627260689,"sku":"GOR003526141","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51480687345937,"sku":"GOR010353877","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0199567611.jpg?v=1751259176"},{"product_id":"stevie-smith-a-critical-biography-book-frances-spalding-9780571142231","title":"Stevie Smith: a Critical Biography","description":"Reveals and explores the intimate relationship between the course of Stevie Smith's life and the evolution of her art. Yet she remained inscrutable, glimpses of her life only appearing through her more famous sister, Virginia Woolf. In this classic authorised biography, Frances Spalding draws upon a mass of unpublished documents to reveal Vanessa Bell's considerable achievements, in both her art and her increasingly unorthodox life. She reveals the central role played by Vanessa in the making of Bloomsbury and uncovers many new and intimate details about the set's domestic, sexual, social and creative lives. As an artist, Vanessa Bell has figured in a number of major exhibitions and is recognised as a key figure within the development of modernist painting in Britain. She has had an entire room at the Tate devoted to her work. Yet this lynchpin of one of the most famous cultural sets of modern times has remained an enigma to her many admirers, and it is only in this portrait of her life that a true account can be given of her marriage to Clive Bell, her affair with Roger Fry and the complex nature of her lasting relationship with Duncan Grant. The third child of Leslie and Julia Stephen, and sister of Vanessa (later Bell), Woolf was a central figure in the Bloomsbury Group: that union of friends who revolutionised British culture with their innovative approach to art, design and society in the early years of the twentieth century. Portraiture figured greatly in Woolf's life. Portraits by G.F. Watts and photographs made by her aunt, Julia Margaret Cameron, furnished rooms in which she lived. Written portraits were produced in the family home; her father, Leslie Stephen, published short biographies of Samuel Johnson, Pope, Swift, George Eliot and Thomas Hobbes, while editing the first twenty-six volumes of the Dictionary of National Biography. Throughout her life, Woolf, a sharp observer and a brilliant wordsmith, composed memorable vignettes-in-words of people she knew or encountered, and was herself portrayed by artists and photographers on many occasions. Illustrated with over a hundred works from public and private collections, documentary photographs and extracts from her writings, this book catches Woolf's appearance and that of the world around her. It also points to her pursuit of the hidden, the fleeting and the obscure, in her desire to understand better the place and moment in time and in history in which she lived. In charting some of the milestones in Woolf's life, author Frances Spalding acknowledges the seen and unseen aspects of her subject; the outer and the inner, the recognisable and the concealed.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49553446109457,"sku":"GOR007739250","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50161560617233,"sku":"GOR007851660","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50401268433169,"sku":"CIN1855144816G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50575068889361,"sku":"CIN1855144816VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51053695074577,"sku":"NIN9781855144811","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1855144816.jpg?v=1750898989"},{"product_id":"vanessa-bell-book-frances-spalding-9781857991239","title":"Vanessa Bell","description":"A biography of Vanessa Bell- the artist at the heart of the Bloomsbury Set of ththe early part of this century. She was also a complex woman of great loyalties who managed to remain friendly with husband,ex-lover \u0026amp; lover and keep them friendly with each other.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49558438609169,"sku":"GOR001807289","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49653337391377,"sku":"GOR006689554","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50432929431825,"sku":"GOR002928973","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50439137591569,"sku":"GOR010272470","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1857991230.jpg?v=1751028132"},{"product_id":"vanessa-bell-book-frances-spalding-9781784532413","title":"Vanessa Bell","description":"Vanessa Bell is central to the history of the Bloomsbury Group, yet until this authorised biography was written, she largely remained a silent and inscrutable figure. In 1889 the initiative was taken by Henry Tate, a collector of British art whose fortune was made from refining sugar. Tate offered the nation his collection and a building to house it. After much debate this offer was accepted and the Tate Gallery was built on the site of the former Millbank prison. Officially it was called the National Gallery of British Art, but soon became known to everyone as the Tate. This comprehensive account of the Tate traces its growth over the last 100 years. Works of art, building schemes, Government, public and private sector funding are some of the many factors that shape the Tate's shifting nexus of relationships as it grows and expands. The Tate now has galleries in Liverpool and St Ives, and a Tate Gallery of Modern Art is being created at Bankside.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49577657499921,"sku":"GOR002130400","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50309680660753,"sku":"GOR010591763","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1854372319.jpg?v=1751217805"},{"product_id":"bloomsbury-group-book-frances-spalding-9781855142022","title":"The Bloomsbury Group","description":"Part of the \"Character Sketches\" series, this title looks at the Bloomsbury Group. Schools of artists have worked together, movements have espoused artistic and social theories, wars have influenced subjects. Terms like Surrealism, Abstraction, Post-impressionism, Pop Art and the Modem Movement are in constant use but not always understood or their followers known. Spalding is a lucid and revealing guide who wears her scholarship lightly' Sunday Times 'Spalding’s prose is as clear as a Ravilious greenhouse, her thoughts as orderly as a Ben Nicholson white relief' The Times A fresh look at a period of English art that has surged in interest and popularity in recent years, authored by one of Britain's leading art historians and critics. The 21st century has seen a surge of interest in English art of the interwar years. Women artists, such as Winifred Knights, Frances Hodgkins and Evelyn Dunbar, have come to the fore, while familiar names – Paul Nash, Eric Ravilious and Stanley Spencer – have reached new audiences. High-profile exhibitions have attracted recordbreaking visitor numbers and challenged received opinion. In The Real and the Romantic, Frances Spalding, one of Britain’s leading art historians and critics, takes a fresh and timely look at this rich period in English art. The devastation of the First World War left the art world decentred and directionless. This book is about its recovery. Spalding explores how exciting new ideas co-existed with a desire for continuity and a renewed interest in the past. We see the challenge to English artists represented by Cézanne and Picasso, and the role played by museums and galleries in this period. Women artists, writers and curators contributed to the emergence of a new avant-garde. The English landscape was revisited in modern terms. The 1930s marked a high point in the history of modernism in Britain, but the mood darkened with the prospect of a return to war. The former advance towards abstraction and internationalism was replaced by a renewed concern with history, place, memory and a sense of belonging. Native traditions were revived in modern terms but in ways that also let in the past. Surrealism further disturbed the ascetic purity of high modernism and fed into the British love of the strange. Throughout these years, the pursuit of ‘the real’ was set against, and sometimes merged with, an inclination towards the ‘romantic’, as English artists sought to respond to their subjects and their times.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49740099158289,"sku":"NGR9780500518649","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49947511488785,"sku":"GOR012256946","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50008265916689,"sku":"CIN0500518645VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51002908737809,"sku":"NIN9780500518649","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51189908799761,"sku":"GOR014195634","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52153354387729,"sku":"GOR014497034","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0500518645.jpg?v=1750879533"},{"product_id":"john-piper-myfanwy-piper-book-frances-spalding-9780199567621","title":"John Piper, Myfanwy Piper","description":"This book is about a shared journey made by John and Myfanwy Piper who early on settled down in a small hamlet on the edge of the Chilterns, whence they proceeded to produce work which placed them centre stage in the cultural landscape of the twentieth century. 'Only those who live most vividly in the present', John Russell observed of John and Myfanwy Piper, 'deserve to inherit the past'.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49915274756369,"sku":"GOR007367568","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50557048914193,"sku":"GOR003508049","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51748318544145,"sku":"GOR010558457","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/019956762X.jpg?v=1751426473"},{"product_id":"roger-fry-book-frances-spalding-9780236401789","title":"Roger Fry","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50310670090513,"sku":"GOR006731668","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0236401785.jpg?v=1751195467"},{"product_id":"roger-fry-art-and-life-book-frances-spalding-9780520041264","title":"Roger Fry, Art and Life","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50355275235601,"sku":"CIN0520041267A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0520041267.jpg?v=1750741503"},{"product_id":"john-minton-book-frances-spalding-9780853319184","title":"John Minton","description":"John Minton (1917-57) was an artist, a Bohemian and, in his own lifetime, a myth. His deep melancholy was for the most part kept hidden behind a euphoric generosity and a wild restlessness. But gradually, like his alcoholism, it became all-pervasive, and tragic and embittered he took his own life, aged thirty-nine. Themes such as the importance of place in Clough's oeuvre, her interests in Surrealism, Neo-Romanticism and Abstract Expressionism run alongside broader debates such as the artist's position within the English art scene and her critical reception. Her relationship with her aunt, designer and architect Eileen Gray, is given due attention, as are other key alliances in her life. Flamboyant dandy and ebullient publicist, friend of Oscar Wilde, Whistler was also a meticulous craftsman dedicated to the perfection of his art. He was born in the United States but travelled to Paris to study painting. Under the influence of Courbet, he began as a realist painter, but gradually developed a startlingly original method of composition, refining his technique to the barest essentials. He was one of the first to argue that the abstract ingredients of a painting - the lines, shapes, colours and tones - could in themselves be the subject; he entitled the portrait of his mother \"Arrangement in Grey and Black\". His emphasis on selection and swiftness of execution made a shocking contrast with the art of his day, concerned as it was with finish and elaborate literary allusions. Ruskin, the champion of Pre-Raphaelitism, accused him of \"flinging a pot of paint in the public's face\" - a comment that promptly inspired the famous lawsuit which left Whistler victorious but bankrupt. Whistler was one of the most independent artists in the second half of the nineteenth century, comparable in stature with Degas. His \"Nocturnes\" create an indefinable mood of wistful poetry, while his portraits remain some of the most haunting images in nineteenth-century art.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50778208108817,"sku":"GOR006758291","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0714832359.jpg?v=1750945071"},{"product_id":"vanessa-bell-book-frances-spalding-9780899192055","title":"Vanessa Bell","description":"Vanessa Bell was a central figure within the Bloomsbury Group\u003cbr\u003eand lent to it a stability and coherence it might otherwise have\u003cbr\u003elacked.
