Restaurants, hotels, theatres and bars emptied as people took to the street to gaze upwards. The ship seemed to hover over the New York Times building in 42nd street before turning its bow to the east and heading off towards the Atlantic. New Yorkers had never seen anything like it. They were left to wonder as the thrum of the engines died away. But it was no alien visitation. The huge silver craft, bearing a lion rampant across its bow, was the Scottish-built airship R34 manned by a 30-strong crew of World War I veterans (and a stowaway cat). A few days earlier the R34 had made the first-ever east-west flight across the Atlantic against powerful head winds and electrical storms. The flight of the R34 was one of the great feats of British aviation and it has been shamefully forgotten - but there is a wealth of information out there. Some of it is in the diary kept by General Edward Maitland, which was later published, other material comes from the flight reports of the airship's officers, crew diaries, press interviews, and technical information buried in the National Archives in Kew and in the records of the royal Aeronautical Society and the New York Times. Weaving all of this together, George Rosie paints a vivid picture of the great feats of early 19th Century aviation and one of which Scotland should be immensely proud.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49542007226641,"sku":"GOR003567427","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49628061204753,"sku":"GOR005856796","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1841588636.jpg?v=1750930685"},{"product_id":"death-s-enemy-book-george-rosie-9780099422334","title":"Death's Enemy","description":"This story is set in the republic of Geneva in 1792: when his beloved mother suffers a slow and agonising death, young Victor Frankenstein pledges himself to become death's implacable enemy. So begins a medical and scientific pilgrimage that takes Victor from his childhood home to the University of Ingolstadt in Balvaria, and into the electrical clinics and bloody dissection rooms of London. As a military surgeon with Napoleon's army on the Danube, he is present at the seige of Ulm and attends to the wounded and dying on the killing fields of Austerlitz. Eventually his researches take him to Scotland where, with the anatomists of Edinburgh, he practises his skills as a surgeon, electrician and apprentice bodysnatcher. It is here he witnesses a startling experiment on the body of a hanged man which leads to the culmination of his work - the defeat of death itself.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49563619819793,"sku":"GOR007905705","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49571564192017,"sku":"GOR005968460","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49575967523089,"sku":"GOR013688296","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0099422336.jpg?v=1751162914"},{"product_id":"curious-scotland-book-george-rosie-9781862075337","title":"Curious Scotland","description":"The histories of nations are never as simple as their legends suggest. George Rosie has been driven by a powerful curiosity about the country he has lived in since he was an Edinburgh schoolboy fifty years ago. This lively mindset has established him as one of Scotland's most inquiring writers and journalists, in print and on television. In Curious Scotland, he unearths and illuminates many neglected aspects of Scottish history in a rich collection of episodes that ranges from the Picts to the Indian tribes of North America. What became of the sons of Robert Burns? How did Scotland influence the Ku Klux Klan? Why was a Hebridean island deliberately infested with anthrax? The answers lie in a book which reveals the complexity, contradictions and sheer interestingness of Scotland's long and strange story.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49575006667025,"sku":"GOR001685924","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49613614776593,"sku":"GOR012193415","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1862075336.jpg?v=1750803859"},{"product_id":"death-s-enemy-book-george-rosie-9780434008278","title":"Death's Enemy","description":"Mary Shelley's classic Frankenstein gives a few clues as to Dr Frankenstein's background: he was born in Geneva, studied at the University of Ingolstadt in Bavaria and spent time working as a doctor in Scotland. From these fragments, George Rosie has constructed a wonderful historical novel, tracing Frankenstein's career up to the point at which be begins work on the monster that bears his name. We see Frankenstein's developing obsession with and fear of death, his fascination with the writings of the medieval alchemists, his study of the medical uses of electricity in Bavaria, and his work with the body-snatching doctors of 18th century Glasgow. Rosie's Frankenstein is a man of his time, the range of his scientific interests bears comparison with a Faraday; his appetite for women with a Boswell. A wonderful tour-de-force that wears its learning with a delightful lightness, this is one of the most engaging historical novels for a long time.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49587567165713,"sku":"GOR006178278","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50778162004241,"sku":"GOR007254626","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0434008273.jpg?v=1751197567"},{"product_id":"curious-scotland-book-george-rosie-9781862077881","title":"Curious Scotland","description":"The histories of nations are never as simple as their legends suggest.
