The Derveni Papyrus is by far the most important textual discovery of the 20th century regarding early Greek philosophy, religion, exegetical theory and practice, linguistic ideas, and a host of other areas and issues. But the editorial and interpretative history of this extraordinary document has been very checkered. While the interpretation of the better preserved later columns is still highly controversial in many regards, at least the text of those columns has by and large found a scholarly consensus; but the editorial and interpretative situation with the worse preserved first columns is quite different. This volume offers not one but two editions of the first columns, by Richard Janko and by Valeria Piano, given that it is not currently possible to agree upon a single edition; and it explains clearly and in detail the papyrological problems and doubts that lead to these two editions, making it possible for readers (even non-papyrologists) to form their own informed judgment about the most likely readings to be adopted. Furthermore, it contains a number of articles by leading scholars on the Derveni Papyrus, above all offering original solutions to the question of the relation between the earlier and the later columns, but also providing analysis and interpretation of other, related problems.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50999706845457,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":50999710220561,"sku":"NIN9780192855954","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0192855956.jpg?v=1751037262"},{"product_id":"variants-and-variance-in-classical-textual-cultures-book-glenn-w-most-9783111017105","title":"Variants and Variance in Classical Textual Cultures","description":"Given the limited durability of most textual supports, texts must be reproduced if they are to survive. And given the proliferation over time of users, practices, and places which need to have access to the texts that are important for cultural institutions, this is particularly true for authoritative texts. But the reproduction of texts by traditional means – either orally or by hand – inevitably produces variations. These variations can arise because of inattention, confusion, misunderstanding, deliberate modification, physical damage, and many other factors. In general, the more a text is reproduced, the more variations are likely to occur. But although the fact of textual variation in general is doubtless an anthropological universal, the specific forms it takes and the specific attitudes to its occurrence seem to vary widely from culture to culture. How variations develop in different cultures, on the basis of which forms of scholarly practices, collaborations, and institutional frameworks; what variants say about a culture’s understandings of text, authorship, and collective authorship; what happens when variants become creative and generate their own strands of tradition; to what degree changes in transmission media and processes of distribution, translations, or the migration of texts into different cultural or institutional contexts can influence or be influenced by the development of variants – these are the questions that this book addresses in a historical and culturally comparative perspective.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51387880505617,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51387881193745,"sku":"NIN9783111017105","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3111017109.jpg?v=1750805890"},{"product_id":"poetics-of-murder-detective-fiction-and-literary-theory-book-glenn-w-most-9780156723121","title":"The Poetics of Murder : Detective Fiction and Literary Theory","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51599591735569,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51599591801105,"sku":"CIN0156723123G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52458306011409,"sku":"GOR014529025","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0156723123.jpg?v=1751257949"},{"product_id":"doubting-thomas-book-glenn-w-most-9780674019140","title":"Doubting Thomas","description":"Reveals how little we may really understand about the disciple Thomas, and how much we might learn from the strange twists and turns Thomas' story has taken over time.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52496740647185,"sku":"CIN0674019148VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52708547723537,"sku":"CIN0674019148G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780674019140.jpg?v=1760045409"},{"product_id":"plurilingualism-in-traditional-eurasian-scholarship-book-glenn-w-most-9789004464667","title":"Plurilingualism in Traditional Eurasian Scholarship","description":"Was plurilingualism the exception or the norm in traditional Eurasian scholarship? This volume presents a selection of primary sources--in many cases translated into English for the first time--with introductions that provide fascinating historical materials for challenging notions of the ways in which traditional Eurasian scholars dealt with plurilingualism and monolingualism. Comparative in approach, global in scope, and historical in orientation, it engages with the growing discussion of plurilingualism and focuses on fundamental scholarly practices in various premodern and early modern societies--Chinese, Indian, Mesopotamian, Jewish, Islamic, Ancient Greek, and Roman--asking how these were conceived by the agents themselves. The volume will be an indispensable resource for courses on these subjects and on the history of scholarship and reflection on language throughout the world.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52679015399697,"sku":"NLS9789004464667","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789004464667.jpg?v=1768557942"},{"product_id":"homer-in-print-book-glenn-w-most-9780943056418","title":"Homer in Print","description":"Homer in Print traces the print transmission and literary reception of the Iliad and the Odyssey from the fifteenth through the twentieth century.Over 175 mini essays provide new details of each included edition s textual, intellectual, and publishing history. Three long-form essays contributed by scholars Glenn W. Most and David Wray, and collector M. C. Lang, place these editions within a wider context, exploring their role in ancient and modern philology, translation studies, and the history of printing. An extensive and strikingly illustrated testament to the power and popularity of Homer over the past five hundred years, Homer in Print is an essential text for students and teachers of classics, classical reception, comparative literature, and book history. This volume, a product of new research and sharp scholarship, evidences Homer s ability to captivate the imaginations of poets, editors, and readers throughout the centuries.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52817499783441,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52817500111121,"sku":"CIN0943056411G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780943056418.jpg?v=1764273845"},{"product_id":"doubting-thomas-book-glenn-w-most-9780674025615","title":"Doubting Thomas","description":"From the New Testament, Most traces Thomas's many permutations: Gnostic saint, missionary to India, paragon of Christian orthodoxy, hero of skepticism, and example of doubt, blasphemy, and violence.
