In 2008, Sugimoto and the architect Tomoyuki Sakakida founded the New Material Research Laboratory, an architectural firm that researches and develops “new materials” from known materials and techniques by applying a different approach and interpretation. The Laboratory's aim is to rethink the use of old materials passed on to us from ancient times, the Middle Ages and the modern period. It advocates for a reconnection of the present with a bygone era, and to extend that connection to the future through architecture. Old Is New delves into the art and architecture, as well as the archaeological philosophy and contemporary practice of the New Material Research Laboratory. Richly illustrated, the book shows the choice of materials for each project. The photographs in itself are compositions, presenting scenes that show a balance of the present and past. Sugimoto and Sakakida, discussing their practice and approach, wrote the principal texts of this volume. Additional text contributions delve into the origin of the laboratory’s design ethos rooted in Japanese tradition and aesthetics and their historical context. The book also includes an annotated index of materials and classic Japanese techniques with information drawn from the laboratory’s research.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49930107945233,"sku":"NGR9783037786468","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51063783293201,"sku":"NIN9783037786468","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3037786469.jpg?v=1751126283"},{"product_id":"hiroshi-sugimoto-book-hiroshi-sugimoto-9781597113595","title":"Hiroshi Sugimoto","description":"Hiroshi Sugimoto has explored ideas of time, empiricism, and metaphysics through a surreal and formalistic approach since the 1970s. A self-described “habitual self-interlocutor,” Sugimoto uses the camera as a bridge between abstract questions and the quiet, comical nature of modern everyday life. Whether formally photographing Madame Tussauds wax figures and the wildlife scenes at the American Museum of Natural History, or opening the lens of his 8-by-10 camera to capture a two-hour-long film in one exposure, he explores themes of consumerism, narrative, and existence in rich and evocative imagery. This new project presents a survey of Sugimoto’s iconic work, from his calm seascapes to his more recent exploration of lightning fields and photogenic drawing. Created in conjunction with an upcoming exhibition at FUNDACIÓN MAPFRE in Spain, the survey includes an introduction and essay by writer and curator Philip Larratt-Smith, an interview with Sugimoto, and text by the prominent Brazilian artist Iran do Espírito Santo.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50393915064593,"sku":"CIN159711359XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52348577874193,"sku":"NLS9781597113595","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/159711359X.jpg?v=1751182716"},{"product_id":"hiroshi-sugimoto-snow-white-book-hiroshi-sugimoto-9788862085205","title":"Hiroshi Sugimoto: Snow White","description":"All of the photographs in  Snow White  are from his  Theaters  series and include many  of his well known photographs of classic movie palaces and drive-ins, along with new  photographs of Italian opera houses and abandoned theaters. Sugimoto began the  Theaters  series four decades ago. To make these images, he exposes the film inside the  dark theater (or in the case of the drive-ins, outside at night) for the duration of the  movie. The running movie is the only source of light bringing out the architectural  details of these spaces.The Disney movie  Snow White  was running when Sugimoto  photographed Palace Theater, Gary, 2013, one of the abandoned theaters that is  reproduced here. In this book, Sugimoto reveals for the first time the movies that were  screened when he took these photographs and the exposure time of each photograph.  Each artwork in  Snow White  is accompanied by the name of the movie, the running  time of the each, and a short text about each written by Sugimoto. The black and  white photographs are hand-tipped onto the pages. The book is bound in silk cloth.  Each book contains a numbered colophon signed by Sugimoto.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51066620805393,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51066623918353,"sku":"NIN9788862085205","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/8862085206.jpg?v=1751351733"},{"product_id":"rothko-sugimoto-dark-paintings-and-seascapes-book-rothko-mark-hiroshi-sugimoto-r-9781935410331","title":"Rothko\/Sugimoto - Dark Paintings and Seascapes","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52744939569425,"sku":"GOR014608021","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53157238735121,"sku":"GOR014787058","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781935410331.jpg?v=1763505362"},{"product_id":"hiroshi-sugimoto-book-hiroshi-sugimoto-9780847860692","title":"Hiroshi Sugimoto","description":"In an electrifying moment in 1585, four Japanese youths appeared before Pope Gregory XIII, summoned to his court from the nascent Christian community in Japan to present themselves at the capital of their faith. Legendary photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto follows in the boys  footsteps, capturing the architectural wonders of Rome, Florence, and Venice as the Eastern visitors might have seen them on their grand tour. Sugimoto s images present each chapel and theatre as a marvel, imposing and dark. He contextualizes his photographs with Japanese works from the period and the decades that follow. These panels and objects attest to the impact of Western culture, specifically Jesuit Christianity, on Momoyama and Edo aesthetics as Japanese artists envisioned scenes of European life.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53157934989585,"sku":"GOR014788005","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780847860692.jpg?v=1772036695"},{"product_id":"stop-time-book-hiroshi-sugimoto-9781597116039","title":"Stop Time","description":"A propulsive inquiry into the elusive nature of time, light, and history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53548777636113,"sku":"NGR9781597116039","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}]},{"product_id":"hiroshi-sugimoto-enoura-observatory-book-hiroshi-sugimoto-9798987784549","title":"Hiroshi Sugimoto: Enoura Observatory","description":"Over a decade in the making, Sugimoto's masterpiece observatory building at his art foundation in Odawara, Japan, is the culmination of his architectural practice  Apart from photography, Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto has been working in sculpture, performing arts and architecture for more than 20 years. Since the early 2010s, he has been constructing the Enoura Observatory, and with his singular vision he has brought together ancient and contemporary Japanese traditions in one art and architectural complex. This book provides an account of this stunning multidisciplinary project. The Observatory, part of the artist's Odawara Art Foundation, is sited on a hilly area covered with citrus trees in Odawara, nestled against the outer rim of the Hakone Mountains and overlooking Sagami Bay. Odawara is home to groups of artisans with mastery of sophisticated techniques that have been handed down for centuries. Sugimoto has constructed the Enoura Observatory using these techniques, which are growing increasingly difficult to preserve. He envisions it as a forum for disseminating art and culture both within Japan and to the rest of the world. The stunning photographs in Enoura Observatory: Land of Distant Memories reveal Sugimoto's poetic vision for this total work of art that is the culmination of his art practice. Hiroshi Sugimoto was born in Tokyo in 1948. A photographer since the 1970s, his work deals with history and temporal existence by investigating themes of time, empiricism and metaphysics. Sugimoto has received numerous grants and fellowships, and his work is held in the collections of Tate Gallery, London, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among many others. Sugimoto lives between Tokyo and New York City.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53612990988561,"sku":"NGR9798987784549","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9798987784549.jpg?v=1780315997"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-au\/collections\/author-books-by-hiroshi-sugimoto.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
