At the end of the nineteenth century this theory came to life in the works of Sophus Lie. It had its origins in Lie's idea of applying Galois theory to differential equations and in Klein's Erlanger Programm of treat- ing symmetry groups as the fundamental objects in geometry. Lie's approach to many problems of analysis and geometry was mainly local, that is, valid in local coordinate systems only. At the beginning of the twentieth century E. Cartan and Weyl began a systematic treatment of the global aspects of Lie's theory. Since then this theory has ramified tremendously and now, as the twentieth century is coming to a close, its concepts and methods pervade mathematics and theoretical physics. Despite the plethora of books devoted to Lie groups and Lie algebras we feel there is justification for a text that puts emphasis on Lie's principal idea, namely, geometry treated by a blend of algebra and analysis. Lie groups are geometrical objects whose structure can be described conveniently in terms of group actions and fiber bundles. Therefore our point of view is mainly differential geometrical. We have made no attempt to discuss systematically the theory of infinite-dimensional Lie groups and Lie algebras, which is cur- rently an active area of research. We now give a short description of the contents of each chapter.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52142642364689,"sku":"NLS9783540152934","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53072159867153,"sku":"CIN3540152938VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783540152934.jpg?v=1757581176"},{"product_id":"heat-kernel-lefschetz-fixed-point-formula-for-the-spin-c-dirac-operator-book-jj-duistermaat-9780817682460","title":"The Heat Kernel Lefschetz Fixed Point Formula for the Spin-c Dirac Operator","description":"Reprinted as it originally appeared in the 1990s, this work is as an affordable text that will be of interest to a range of researchers in geometric analysis and mathematical physics.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52337852711185,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52337853333777,"sku":"NLS9780817682460","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780817682460.jpg?v=1758167986"},{"product_id":"distributions-book-jj-duistermaat-9780817646721","title":"Distributions","description":"I am sure that something must be found. There must exist a notion of generalized functions which are to functions what the real numbers are to the rationals (G. Peano, 1912) Not that much effort is needed, for it is such a smooth and simple theory (F. Tre`ves, 1975) In undergraduate physics a lecturer will be tempted to say on certain occasions: “Let ?. x\/ be a function on the line that equals 0 away from 0 and is in?nite at 0 in such a way that its total integral is 1. The most important property of ?. x\/ is exempli?ed Z by the identity 1 . x\/?. x\/ dx D . 0\/; 1 where is any continuous function of x. ” Such a function ?. x\/ is an object that one frequently would like to use, but of course there is no such function, because a function that is 0 everywhere except at one point has integral 0. All the same, it is important to realize what our lecturer is trying to accomplish: to describe an object in terms of the way it behaves when integrated against a function. It is for such purposes that the theory of distributions, or “generalized functions,” was created. It can be formulated in all dimensions, its mathematical scope is vast, and it has revolutionized modern analysis.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52430923956497,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52430925005073,"sku":"NLS9780817646721","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780817646721.jpg?v=1759171038"},{"product_id":"fourier-integral-operators-book-jj-duistermaat-9780817681074","title":"Fourier Integral Operators","description":"More than twenty years ago I gave a course on Fourier Integral Op erators at the Catholic University of Nijmegen (1970-71) from which a set of lecture notes were written up; the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences in New York distributed these notes for many years, but they be came increasingly difficult to obtain. The current text is essentially a nicely TeXed version of those notes with some minor additions (e.g., figures) and corrections. Apparently an attractive aspect of our approach to Fourier Integral Operators was its introduction to symplectic differential geometry, the basic facts of which are needed for making the step from the local definitions to the global calculus. A first example of the latter is the definition of the wave front set of a distribution in terms of testing with oscillatory functions. This is obviously coordinate-invariant and automatically realizes the wave front set as a subset of the cotangent bundle, the symplectic manifold in which the global calculus takes place.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52433261363473,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52433261953297,"sku":"NLS9780817681074","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780817681074.jpg?v=1759177445"},{"product_id":"heat-kernel-lefschetz-fixed-point-formula-for-the-spin-c-dirac-operator-book-jj-duistermaat-9781461253464","title":"The Heat Kernel Lefschetz Fixed Point Formula for the Spin-c Dirac Operator","description":"When visiting M.I.T. for two weeks in October 1994, Victor Guillemin made me enthusiastic about a problem in symplectic geometry which involved the use of the so-called spin-c Dirac operator. Back in Berkeley, where I had l spent a sabbatical semester , I tried to understand the basic facts about this operator: its definition, the main theorems about it, and their proofs. This book is an outgrowth of the notes in which I worked this out. For me this was a great learning experience because of the many beautiful mathematical structures which are involved. I thank the Editorial Board of Birkhauser, especially Haim Brezis, for sug gesting the publication of these notes as a book. I am also very grateful for the suggestions by the referees, which have led to substantial improvements in the presentation. Finally I would like to express special thanks to Ann Kostant for her help and her prodding me, in her charming way, into the right direction. J.J.
