When Donne was Dean of St Paul's, in the last years of his life, he fell seriously ill. As he lay in bed he heard, day after day, the bells tolling for funerals, often of people he had known. Believing that he himself was soon to die, the bells made him aware of the interdependence of men and women in the life of mankind as a whole. Afterwards he wrote a long piece of meditative prose, the Devotions, in which he set down the progression of his thoughts and emotions during his illness. This beautiful book, containing selections from that work, expresses through Donne's evocative prose our relationship with our fellow human beings and our place in the great cycle of life and death. In moments of despair it reminds us that, although we must ultimately die, we are important as members of the human race; our very existence makes its own contribution to mankind, and however insignificant and useless we may feel, we matter to each other. Haunting pen and ink drawings by Helen Lush complement the imagery of the text, bringing us a message of hope and an understanding of the meaning of our lives.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49511651770641,"sku":"GOR004001675","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49596990325009,"sku":"GOR001349385","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49803689787665,"sku":"CIN0285628747G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50132155072785,"sku":"GOR003928822","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50761675997457,"sku":"CIN0285628747A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50951196803345,"sku":"CIN0285628747VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51277881540881,"sku":"GOR010321950","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0285628747.jpg?v=1772272051"},{"product_id":"complete-english-poems-book-john-donne-9780140422092","title":"The Complete English Poems","description":"No poet has been more wilfully contradictory than John Donne, whose works forge unforgettable connections between extremes of passion and mental energy. From satire to tender elegy, from sacred devotion to lust, he conveys an astonishing range of emotions and poetic moods. Constant in his work, however, is an intensity of feeling and expression and complexity of argument that is as evident in religious meditations such as 'Good Friday 1613. Riding Westward' as it is in secular love poems such as 'The Sun Rising' or 'The Flea'. 'The intricacy and subtlety of his imagination are the length and depth of the furrow made by his passion,' wrote Yeats, pinpointing the unique genius of a poet who combined ardour and intellect in equal measure.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49513341321489,"sku":"GOR001232192","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49546514071825,"sku":"GOR001302962","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49561109692689,"sku":"GOR001311204","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49723897872657,"sku":"CIN0140422099G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49727410798865,"sku":"NGR9780140422092","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":49882448429329,"sku":"CIN0140422099A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50131438010641,"sku":"GOR008492925","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50291624182033,"sku":"CIN0140422099VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0140422099.jpg?v=1750843880"},{"product_id":"one-equall-light-book-john-donne-9781853115400","title":"One Equall Light","description":"This anthology comprises approximately 1000 extracts, 800 of which are prose from the writings of John Donne. It brings together a unique combination of Donne's poetry and prose - all the major poems, complemented by rarely published letters and extracts from Donne's sermons - to give the essence of his work and thinking. John Donne (1572-1631) is today celebrated as one of the greatest of the metaphysical poets, whose verse was daringly original and whose use of imagery and conceits marked a new, intellectual approach to poetry. His Satires, Elegies, and Songs and Sonnets, which contain his most famous love poems, were complemented by his religious writing, both verse and prose. He was one of the most renowned preachers of his day, and this volume does equal justice to the full range of his work. In addition to nearly all his English poetry this volume includes over 130 extracts from Donne's sermons, as well as the full text of his last sermon, 'Death's Duel'. A distinguishing feature of the selection is that the works are arranged in the chronological order of their composition. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. This was where the computer was born and the German Enigma code was broken during World War I. In this action-packed novel, Chief Wren Sally Evans is found murdered on the grounds of Bletchley Park. The year is 1941, and two police detectives are given the unenviable task of solving the crime that occurred in Britain's most secure code-breaking establishment, a place where questions are not welcomed. Druid is a German spy for Himmler who is parachuted into England to authenticate the communications to Germany by Abwehr agents already embedded in England. But upon his arrival, his mission is changed. Baron is a Soviet spy working at Bletchley Park for the first secretary of the Soviet Embassy in London, and he knew Sally Evans. The climax plays out within the pastoral Buckinghamshire countryside. Who committed A Murder at Bletchley Park? Peter Clements is a retired airline pilot who has also worked in television, film, and radio. Born in England, he has also lived in Canada, Germany, and the Middle East. Regarded by many as the greatest of the Metaphysical poets, John Donne was also among the most intriguing figures of the Renaissance. A sensualist who composed erotic and playful love poetry in his youth, he was raised a Catholic but later became one of the most admired Protestant preachers of his time. The Selected Poems reflects this wide diversity, and includes his youthful Songs and Sonnets, epigrams, elegies, letters, satires, and the profoundly moving Divine Poems composed towards the end of his life. From joyful poems such as 'The Flea', which transforms the image of a louse into something marvellous, to the intimate and intense Holy Sonnets, Donne breathed new vigour into poetry by drawing lucid and often startling metaphors from the world in which he lived. His poems remain among the most passionate, profound and spiritual in the English language. Ilona Bell's introduction considers Donne's life, faith and influence. This edition also includes detailed notes and a further reading list. John Donne (1572-1631) was born into a family of devout Catholics. He studied at Oxford University, travelled on the continent, and then studied law at Lincoln's Inn. In the early 1600s Donne became a Member of Parliament and Justice of the Peace, obtaining temporary positions and patronage from a number of aristocrats who are the subjects of his poems. He was ordained as an Anglican minister in 1615, and in 1621 was made Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral, a position he held until his death. If you enjoyed Donne's Selected Poems, you might enjoy John Milton's Paradise Lost, also available in Penguin Classics.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49536681312529,"sku":"GOR003360849","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49566347657489,"sku":"GOR002352493","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49655594713361,"sku":"GOR003287904","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49728950796561,"sku":"NGR9780140424409","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50468210245905,"sku":"CIN0140424407G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51695514026257,"sku":"CIN0140424407VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52333003669777,"sku":"NLS9780140424409","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52471888380177,"sku":"GOR008417836","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":53365506441489,"sku":"CIN0140424407A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0140424407.jpg?v=1751445541"},{"product_id":"complete-english-poems-book-john-donne-9781857150056","title":"The Complete English Poems","description":"Donne created new forms of lyric, satire, elegiac and religious verse, and his independence of view, compact manner of expression encompassing conflicting moods, impassioned paradox, outbreaks of cynicism and wry humour make his work particularly appealing to the twentieth-century mind. A sensualist who composed erotic and playful love poetry in his youth, he was raised a Catholic but later became one of the most admired Protestant preachers of his time. The Collected Poetry reflects this wide diversity, and includes his youthful songs and sonnets, epigrams, elegies, letters, satires, and the profoundly moving Divine Poems composed towards the end of his life. From joyful poems such as 'The Flea', which transforms the image of a louse into something marvellous, to the intimate and intense Holy Sonnets, Donne breathed new vigour into poetry by drawing lucid and often startling metaphors from the world in which he lived. His poems remain among the most passionate, profound and spiritual in the English language.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD","offer_id":49543054164241,"sku":"GOR005405482","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD","offer_id":49662151295249,"sku":"GOR008640930","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW","offer_id":50277569724689,"sku":"GOR011492308","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD","offer_id":50706869158161,"sku":"CIN0141191570G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ","offer_id":53157115101457,"sku":"GOR007181911","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0141191570.jpg?v=1751100947"},{"product_id":"john-donne-book-john-donne-9780281054732","title":"John Donne","description":"Volume four on seventeenth century spiritual writing, John Donne (1572-1631) was one of the most outstanding of the metaphysical poets. In his day it seemed to his admirers that Donne had changed the literary universe, and he is now widely regarded as the founder of the metaphysical 'school'. Donne's poetry is highly distinctive and individual, adopting a multitude of rhythms, images, forms, and personae, from irresistible seducer to devout believer. His greatness stems from the subtleties and ambivalences of tone that convey his remarkably modern awareness of the instability of the self. This collection of Donne's verse is chosen from the Oxford Authors critical edition of his major works. It includes a wide selection from his secular and divine poems, such as the rebellious and libertine satires and love elegies, the virtuoso Songs and Sonnets, and the desperate, passionate Holy Sonnets. John Carey's introduction and extensive notes provide valuable insights into Donne's poetic genius.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49594790904081,"sku":"GOR001894886","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50186482188561,"sku":"CIN0192834908G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52509283549457,"sku":"CIN0192834908VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0192834908.jpg?v=1751195121"},{"product_id":"selected-poetry-and-prose-book-john-donne-9780416402209","title":"Selected Poetry and Prose","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49597296902417,"sku":"GOR004534928","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49910531621137,"sku":"CIN0416402208G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0416402208.jpg?v=1751260652"},{"product_id":"poetical-works-book-john-donne-9780192811134","title":"Poetical Works","description":"Originally published in April 1996, a collection of all the poems which are thought to have been written by John Donne, including his elegies, earthly and abstract love poems, songs and letters and sermons. A sensualist who composed erotic and playful love poetry in his youth, he was raised a Catholic but later became one of the most admired Protestant preachers of his time. \"The Selected Poems\" reflects this wide diversity, and includes his youthful songs and sonnets, epigrams, elegies, letters, satires, and the profoundly moving \"Divine Poems\" composed towards the end of his life. From joyful poems such as \"The Flea\", which transforms the image of a louse into something marvellous, to the intimate and intense \"Holy Sonnets\", Donne breathed new vigour into poetry by drawing lucid and often startling metaphors from the world in which he lived. His poems remain among the most passionate, profound and spiritual in the English language.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49610530619665,"sku":"GOR004038141","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49640435646737,"sku":"GOR002608001","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50345492283665,"sku":"CIN0140585184G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50772555006225,"sku":"GOR004163602","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":52102541836561,"sku":"CIN0140585184A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0140585184.jpg?v=1751133166"},{"product_id":"complete-english-poems-book-john-donne-9780140802368","title":"The Complete English Poems","description":"'The first poet in the world in some things', is how John Donne was described by his contemporary Ben Jonson. \u003cbr\u003eYet it is only this century that Donne has been indisputably established as a great poet and even, many feel, the greatest love poet of them all. Jonson went on to remark that 'That Donne, for not keeping of an accent, deserved hanging', yet Donne's rhythms, once thought 'unmusical' are now recognized as the natural rhythms of the speaking voice; his 'eccentricity' as a complex self-doubt; his 'obscurity' the reflection of a brilliantly learned and allusive mind. Poets such as Eliot and Empson have found Donne's poetry profoundly attuned to our modern age, while Yeats' glowing comment will always be true: 'the intricacy and subtlety of his imagination are the length and depth of the furrow made by his passion.' \u003cbr\u003eThis volume, superbly edited by Professor Smith, is the first complete edition to make a serious attempt to guide the reader closely through the complexities of Donne's poetry. Considerable attention has been paid to the text, and a selection of the important manuscript variants are included. This edition is also the first to make use of the newly discovered manuscript of the verse letter to Lady Carey and Mistress Essex Rich. \u003cbr\u003eFor more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. His poetry is noted for its vibrancy of language and inventiveness of metaphor, especially as compared to those of his contemporaries. It suggests a healthy appetite for life and its pleasures, while also expressing deep emotion. S. Thomas is Wales's most eminent poet in the English language, and one of the most acclaimed poets writing in Britain today. Since 1946 he has published twenty-six collections of poetry including his massive Collected Poems in 1993. His poems and books have won many prizes including the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry in 1964. Thomas's growing influence on modern poetry has been considerable. This is a result of the poems themselves: Thomas remains a largely private figure, living on the island Anglesey, content to let his writing speak for itself. Thomas's occasional prose writings have consequently been of great importance, providing a glimpse into the craft of his poems and their concerns. Selected Prose is the only book to collect some of his scattered prose in both languages, many Welsh language articles appearing in translation for the first time. It is a varied selection, both creative and critical, aiming to reflect the major preoccupations of Thomas and his poetry: religion and theology; Wales and its topography; Welsh Nationalism and the language; Nature and the countryside; the poet and his craft. It includes also the translated transcript of an autobiographical radio broadcast.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49627686666513,"sku":"GOR001666919","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":49853190865169,"sku":"CIN0140432396A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50067985432849,"sku":"GOR004125136","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50093699531025,"sku":"GOR001757754","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51693843546385,"sku":"CIN0140432396VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0140432396.jpg?v=1751420000"},{"product_id":"poems-book-john-donne-9780460018678","title":"Poems","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49633107312913,"sku":"GOR006312566","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0460018671.jpg?v=1750911338"},{"product_id":"selected-letters-book-john-donne-9781857545616","title":"Selected Letters","description":"The 95 letters printed here in there entirety - dating from the late 1590s until a short time before Donne's death - constitute approximately half of his surviving correspondence.
