This volume includes five works that aim to fill in the gaps in this incomplete masterpiece. The pieces presented here date from the fifteenth century and survive in at least one manuscript collection of Chaucer's tales: John Lydgate's Prologue to the Siege of Thebes, The Ploughman's Tale, The Cook's Tale, Spurious Links, and The Canterbury Interlude and Merchant's Tale of Beryn. These pieces of Chaucerian apocrypha have been collected into one student-friendly edition, including introductions, notes, glosses, and a glossary to accommodate students of all levels of experience in Middle English.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49512805925137,"sku":"GOR013558739","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49665971519761,"sku":"GOR011401134","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50765073252625,"sku":"CIN1879288230VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52662638084369,"sku":"NLS9781879288232","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53261665730833,"sku":"CIN1879288230G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1879288230.jpg?v=1751313864"},{"product_id":"chaucer-and-langland-book-john-m-bowers-9780268022020","title":"Chaucer and Langland","description":"While Langland's poem was immediately popular and influential, it was Chaucer who stood at the head of a literary tradition within a generation of his death. Bowers asks why and how Chaucer, not Langland, was granted this position. His study reveals the political, social, and religious factors that contributed to the formation of a literary canon in fourteenth-century England.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50346460348689,"sku":"CIN026802202XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52593220911377,"sku":"NLS9780268022020","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/026802202X.jpg?v=1761390104"},{"product_id":"tolkien-on-chaucer-1913-1959-book-john-m-bowers-9780192848888","title":"Tolkien on Chaucer, 1913-1959","description":"Tolkien on Chaucer, 1913-59 traces Tolkien's career-long engagement with the works of Geoffrey Chaucer and shows how Chaucer was a major source of inspiration for all of Tolkien's creative works, most notably The Lord of the Rings.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50419793625361,"sku":"NGR9780192848888","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51699822559505,"sku":"NIN9780192848888","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52649229418769,"sku":"GOR014575773","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0192848887.jpg?v=1773915925"},{"product_id":"tolkien-s-lost-chaucer-book-john-m-bowers-9780198842675","title":"Tolkien's Lost Chaucer","description":"Tolkien's Lost Chaucer uncovers the story of an unpublished and previously unknown book by the author of The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien worked between 1922 and 1928 on his Clarendon edition Selections from Chaucer's Poetry and Prose, and though never completed, its 160 pages of commentary reveals much of his thinking about language and storytelling when he was still at the threshold of his career as an epoch-making writer of fantasy literature. Drawing upon other new materials such as his edition of the Reeve's Tale and his Oxford lectures on the Pardoner's Tale, this book reveals Chaucer as a major influence upon Tolkien's literary imagination.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50701709115665,"sku":"GOR010264906","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51000077680913,"sku":"NIN9780198842675","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198842678.jpg?v=1751070160"},{"product_id":"western-literary-canon-in-context-cd-9781598034691","title":"Western Literary Canon in Context","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51334402736401,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51334404571409,"sku":"CIN1598034693VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1598034693.jpg?v=1750959593"},{"product_id":"introduction-to-the-gawain-poet-book-john-m-bowers-9780813049588","title":"An Introduction to the Gawain Poet","description":"In An Introduction to the Gawain Poet, John Bowers surveys an expanded selection of the works of Chaucer's anonymous contemporary, considering Sir Gawain and the Green Knight alongside the poet's lesser known but no less brilliant works.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52122694025489,"sku":"NLS9780813049588","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53376937722129,"sku":"NIN9780813049588","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780813049588.jpg?v=1763118335"},{"product_id":"politics-of-pearl-book-john-m-bowers-9780859915991","title":"The Politics of Pearl","description":"Close analysis of the poem reveals extensive allusion to contemporary social, religious and political events.  This is an entirely new and original reading of Pearl, placing  the anonymous masterpiece in the context of the Cheshire coterie that flourished at the court of Richard II during the 1390s. The brilliance of its poetic construction has long been acknowledged, but here Pearl is also shown to engage with the social, religious and political events of the late fourteenth century. The poem's defense of infant baptism is seen as countering Lollardcriticism of the sacraments, its retelling of the Parable of the Vineyard as offering scriptural support to the aims of the Statute of Labourers. The poem's dazzling representation of aristocratic magnificence - jewelled crowns, gem-embroidered gowns, livery badges, civic processions, and monumental architecture - studied in this context, relates to the spectacular royal culture of one of England's most ambitious monarchs. The courtly elegy offered consolation after the death of Anne of Bohemia, while its vision of a royal child-bride figured in the intense national debate over the king's prospective marriage to the six-year-old Isabelle of France. Richard II's fall from power brought to an end not simply Cheshire privilege, but also a poetic tradition that produced some of the finest works of English literature, most notably Pearl and Gawain and the Green Knight.     Professor JOHN BOWERS teaches at the Department of English at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52147951436049,"sku":"NLS9780859915991","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780859915991.jpg?v=1757602151"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-au\/collections\/author-books-by-john-m-bowers.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
