Satire may claim the higher purpose of social critique or moral reform, or it may simply revel in its own transgressive laughter. It exposes frauds, debunks ideals, binds communities, starts arguments, and evokes unconscious fantasies. It has been a central literary genre since ancient times, and has become especially popular and provocative in recent decades. This new introduction to satire takes a historically expansive and theoretically eclectic approach, addressing a range of satirical forms from ancient, Renaissance, and Enlightenment texts through contemporary literary fiction, film, television, and digital media. The beginner in need of a clear, readable overview and the scholar seeking to broaden and deepen existing knowledge will both find this a lively, engaging, and reliable guide to satire, its history, and its continuing relevance in the world.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50102512812305,"sku":"CIN1107682053G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51020080414993,"sku":"NIN9781107682054","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51325422174481,"sku":"CIN1107682053VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52485526847761,"sku":"NLS9781107682054","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53497150046481,"sku":"GOR014946731","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53497927827729,"sku":"GOR009699271","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1107682053.jpg?v=1786279662"},{"product_id":"holt-mcdougal-the-americans-c-2012-book-holt-mcdougal-9780547611570","title":"Holt McDougal the Americans (C) 2012","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50221168558353,"sku":"CIN0547611579A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50456267292945,"sku":"CIN0547611579G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51614206165265,"sku":"CIN0547611579VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0547611579.jpg?v=1786120002"},{"product_id":"staking-a-claim-book-jonathan-greenberg-9780999341902","title":"Staking a Claim","description":"From the post-Reconstruction period to the modern civil rights era, nearly a century of state-sanctioned economic subjugation created what many regard as a permanent black underclass in America. What would have happened had freed slaves truly been enfranchised into the political and economic system after the Civil War? Staking a Claim, the life of Jake Simmons, Jr. - the international tycoon who was the most successful African-American in the history of the oil industry - affords us a rare perspective on this question. Simmons's great-grandfather, Cow Tom, a slave interpreter to a Creek Indian, rose to become the first black chief of a Native American tribe. This was in Indian Territory (which later became Oklahoma), where blacks were able to secure rights denied them in the white-controlled states. Cow Tom passed on a unique legacy of independence and entrepreneurial spirit that gelled in Jake. His resolve strengthened by his studies with Booker T. Washington, Jake took a series of calculated risks that allowed him to accomplish what would have seemed impossible to many - and become enormously rich at it. He began by brokering oil leases for black landowners who had formerly been cheated by white drillers in Oklahoma and Texas. Expanding his operations into postcolonial Africa, he negotiated amiably where America's multinational oil giants feared to tread, winning enormous concessions while earning the goodwill of African leaders. As a political power broker, Jake Simmons was no less impressive. He remained throughout his life what he called a crusader for human dignity. In 1938 he brought one of the first school desegregation cases to the Supreme Court. It was said that while he served as the head of Oklahoma's NAACP his opinion held sway over ten thousand voters. White politicians across the South vied for his support. He asked his sons, How the hell can a black man stay in bed in the morning when white men rule the world? - and he lived by those words.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50370393768209,"sku":"CIN0999341901G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50405230575889,"sku":"CIN0999341901VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52741641634065,"sku":"NIN9780999341902","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0999341901.jpg?v=1751332137"},{"product_id":"america-2034-utopia-rising-book-jonathan-greenberg-9780999341988","title":"America 2034: Utopia Rising","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50464608977169,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50464609698065,"sku":"CIN0999341987G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0999341987.jpg?v=1750917160"},{"product_id":"brave-new-world-contexts-and-legacies-book-jonathan-greenberg-9781137445407","title":"'Brave New World': Contexts and Legacies","description":"This collection of essays provides new readings of Huxleys classic dystopian satire, Brave New World (1932).","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52133747753233,"sku":"NLS9781137445407","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52746967023889,"sku":"NIN9781137445407","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781137445407.jpg?v=1790418664"},{"product_id":"cambridge-introduction-to-satire-book-jonathan-greenberg-9781107030183","title":"The Cambridge Introduction to Satire","description":"In satire, evil, folly, and weakness are held up to ridicule - to the delight of some and the outrage of others. By promoting an antisentimental education, modernism denied the authority of emotion to guarantee moral and literary value. Instead, it fostered sophisticated, detached and apparently cruel attitudes toward pain and suffering. This sensibility challenged the novel's humanistic tradition, set ethics and aesthetics into conflict and fundamentally altered the ways that we know and feel. Through lively and original readings of works by Evelyn Waugh, Stella Gibbons, Nathanael West, Djuna Barnes, Samuel Beckett and others, this book analyzes a body of literature - late modernist satire - that can appear by turns aloof, sadistic, hilarious, ironic and poignant, but which continually questions inherited modes of feeling. By recognizing the centrality of satire to modernist aesthetics, Greenberg offers not only a new chapter in the history of satire but a persuasive new idea of what made modernism modern.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52671293030673,"sku":"NLS9781107008496","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52746691117329,"sku":"NIN9781107008496","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781107008496.jpg?v=1786279454"},{"product_id":"brave-new-world-contexts-and-legacies-book-jonathan-greenberg-9781349685585","title":"'Brave New World': Contexts and Legacies","description":"This collection of essays provides new readings of Huxley's classic dystopian satire, Brave New World (1932).","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52686910390545,"sku":"NLS9781349685585","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781349685585.jpg?v=1786095634"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-au\/collections\/author-books-by-jonathan-greenberg.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
