Clashes over hate speech regulations, affirmative action, abortion, immigration, art, history, and lifestyle questions suggest that America is more polarized than ever before. This study looks at the rapid changes occurring in cities and suburbs in order to understand these cultural conflicts which, according to Rodriguez, have arisen in part because Americans continue to view themselves as city people or suburbanites in a time when the two areas are converging. As suburbs draw more businesses and residents, they produce new forms of art and cultural events which longtime residents resist as undermining the essentially residential quality of suburbs. Similarly, in cities, new parking structures, highways, and downtown malls produce suburban landscapes that urbanites reject, seeing those changes as evidence of the intrusion of suburban culture. Four community conflicts in the Bay Area from the 1960s to the 1990s illustrate these changes. In the San Francisco Bay Area, freeways and rapid transit have brought city and suburb closer together. Local residents have resisted these changes that threaten their communities' original identities. In San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose and Concord, residents have clashed over the construction of freeways and rapid transit, urban and suburban redevelopment, affirmative action, and modern art. In each locality, rapid changes produced conflict over local identities, as white, black, and Chicano residents have attempted to maintain a clear distinction between urban and suburban culture in the face of forces that are driving city and suburb closer together.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":49724873048337,"sku":"CIN0316711179A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52484820762897,"sku":"NLS9780275964061","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/027596406X.jpg?v=1751457672"},{"product_id":"east-side-stories-book-joseph-rodriguez-9781576870723","title":"East Side Stories","description":"Essay by Ruben Martinez and Interview with Luis J. With a passion for art and storytelling, he picked up a camera and started to study in the early 80s. His first subject: the life of New York as seen from his yellow cab. All of the city's humanity met in its streets with layered soundtracks of salsa, rock, disco, reggae, and soon hip-hop booming for all to groove to. But, NYC was also a place of chaos and mayhem. A humanist at heart, his photographs speak of the dignity of the city's working class from all the boroughs and those struggling to get by.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50383137112337,"sku":"CIN1576879313G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52071760462097,"sku":"NIN9781576879313","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53510882492689,"sku":"GOR014952714","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1576879313.jpg?v=1750720088"},{"product_id":"east-side-stories-book-joseph-rodriguez-9781576870020","title":"East Side Stories","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50405003100433,"sku":"CIN1576870022VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1576870022.jpg?v=1751150560"},{"product_id":"flesh-life-book-joseph-rodriguez-9781576873106","title":"Flesh Life","description":"From Nezahualcoyotl, the largest working-class suburb on earth, to La Condesa, Mexico City's hipster hangout, putas and putos stroll the streets, cruising for johns and surviving on their wit. These men, women and transsexuals are sex-workers in a country where extra-marital sex is considered a mortal sin, and, surprisingly, where they ply their trade without official reprisal. In Mexico, macho husbands consort with other men, and virgencitas are anything but. Joseph Rodrguez confronts these contradictions head-on in Flesh Life.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51694996979985,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51694998192401,"sku":"CIN1576873102G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1576873102.jpg?v=1751118987"},{"product_id":"juvenile-book-joseph-rodriguez-9781576871386","title":"Juvenile","description":"Although youth violence in inner cities in the US is declining, incarceration rates and prison terms are only getting higher and longer. Rodriguez, a former inmate himself, spent two years following youth caught up in the juvenile justice system, some on probation or house arrest, some struggling to find a job or complete their education, and others presently incarcerated. He also documented people who work in the juvenile justice system to see how these youth, faced with fewer and fewer second chances, struggle to change their lives. The news coverage at the time exposed the conditions of extreme squalor suffered by the impoverished African American citizens.
