Years of love end with the death of his wife: their flat, furniture and CDs go, even memories fade. He remembers tender moments with his mother, who was killed in a bomb-blast  unleashed by Fascists on Barcelona, the town he was born in. Together they would look at the stars and identify the brightest constellations.    For the narrator, the ideal writer is Tolstoy, an enlightened artistocrat who wished to free his serfs and bring up his children with progressive, humanist principles. Tolstoy?s characters embody dreams of a more intense, varied life: through them, the narrator discovers that freedom only exists in books. Like the books of W.G.Sebald and Italo Calvino, Blind Rider is a fictional memoir that spans a history of the last fifty years. Tender at a personal level, it is at a political level an angry rant at God?s lack of humanity: it confirms Goytisolo?s position as one of the most committed writers of our time.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49509674352913,"sku":"GOR002541353","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49966866792721,"sku":"GOR003973680","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53099846238481,"sku":"GOR013023906","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1852428635.jpg?v=1751249436"},{"product_id":"garden-of-secrets-book-juan-goytisolo-9781852426590","title":"The Garden of Secrets","description":"Over three weeks twenty-eight story-tellers - one for each letter in the Arabic alphabet - meet in a Marrakesh garden to tell the story of a poet, Eusebio, arrested in Melilla in the early days of the Spanish Civil War. The novel recounts the forty days in which, according to Islamic tradition, the soul wanders between death and eternity, still in possession of a tenuous, dreamlike body. After the unexpected death of a friend, the narrator - a writer like Goytisolo - follows her in his imagination into this otherworld where all kinds of implausible (or are they?) things occur. Meanwhile, television and radio report the 40-day war in the Persian Gulf, and images of war's destruction mingle with the narrator's vivid imagination of the torments of the underworld. In some thirty books of fiction, autobiography, essays and journalism, he has turned the Spanish language against what he derides as 'Sunnyspain', flaying the 'Hispanos' while excavating their culture's Moorish and Jewish roots. This, his masterful two-volume autobiography first published in the mid-1980s, broke new ground in Spanish letters with its introspective sexual and emotional honesty. It charts the writer's unique journey from a Barcelona childhood violently disrupted by the Spanish civil war to student rebellion against the Francoist dictatorship and exile as a 'self-banished Spaniard' to Paris in 1956. In Paris, Goytisolo fell in love with Monique Lange, befriended Jean Genet, and discovered his own homosexuality as he supported the struggles for Algerian independence. His passionate, iconoclastic pen spares no one, least of all himself, in this striking portrayal of politics and sexuality in twentieth-century France and Spain.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49763699425553,"sku":"GOR003042150","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51056997302545,"sku":"NIN9781859845554","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51178573857041,"sku":"GOR011325294","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51783119831313,"sku":"CIN185984555XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/185984555X.jpg?v=1751439430"},{"product_id":"don-julian-book-juan-goytisolo-9788437620527","title":"Don Julian","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49909688926481,"sku":"CIN843762052XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50239977685265,"sku":"CIN843762052XVG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51259186544913,"sku":"GOR006146694","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/843762052X.jpg?v=1751286229"},{"product_id":"count-julian-book-juan-goytisolo-9780670005864","title":"Count Julian","description":"\u003cp\u003eegend has it that Count Julian opened the gates of Spain to the Moorish invaders and introduced eight hundred years of Islamic influence. These essays, originating in Goytisolo's travels in the late 1990s, provide rich historical analysis and moving first-person reportage of life in four explosive war-zones: Sarajevo, Algeria, the West Bank and Gaza, and Chechnya. From the 17th century to the Gulf War, the West has regarded Islam as the enemy on the doorstep, and this book elucidates how relations between Islam and the West continue to be shaped in a climate of ideological, political, and cultural confrontation.  Goytisolo examines the fratricidal frenzy in Algeria and the war waged by French police against North African migrants in France, and he describes a besieged Sarajevo transformed into a concentration camp surrounded by barbed wire. He contemplates the despair and poverty of Palestinian youth living in the Occupied Territories and details the brutality of the Russian war in the Caucasus. Whether reporting on the fate of the Bosnians after the break up of the former Yugoslavia or analyzing the growing appeal of fundamentalisms - Islamic, Jewish, and Russian Orthodox - Goytisolo displays the same blend of intelligence, vision, and warm fellow-feeling that has made him one the most imposing literary figures of our time.  Many of these succinct and eloquent essays first appeared in Spain's leading newspaper El Pais, and English translations were published in the Times Literary Supplement (London).  Juan Goytisolo was born in Barcelona in 1931. In 1993 he was awarded the Nelly Sachs Prize for his literary achievement and contribution to world culture. Sie waren den Verlegern etwas zu linkslastig. Deshalb habe ich die Aufgabe  bernommen, sie zu  bersetzen. Das tat ich vor  ber 40 Jahren und das erste Buch ist erschienen und dann ging dem kleinen Verlag das Geld aus. Er schickte mir weder die  bersetzung noch dazu geh rende Fotos zur ck. Deswegen  bersetzte ich jetzt das Buch zum 2. Mal. Beide B cher haben mich von Anfang an fasziniert und ergriffen. Das erste handelt von einem Stadtviertel in Almeria, wo die Roma in erb rmlichen Verh ltnissen lebten. Und dies Buch handelt von der sehr gro en Gemeinde Campos de N jar, wo Spanier fast eben so miserabel lebten wie die Zigeuner in La Chanca. Ich besuchte sie 1981 und war entsetzt. Doch jetzt, nach genau 40 Jahren, habe ich mir erneut im Netz diese Gemeinde angeschaut. Sie war fast nicht wiederzuerkennen. Die ganze Region hat sich gr ndlich verwandelt. Die D rfer sind renoviert, modernisiert und liebevoll geschm ckt worden. Die Gemeinde hat es vermieden, den eigenen Strand mit Bettenburgen zuzubauen, sondern hat stattdessen ein riesengro es Naturreservat halb auf dem Land und zur H lfte im Meer angelegt mit einem supermodernen Museum. Die Gemeinde ist zu einer Perle des spanischen Tourismus geworden. Deswegen habe ich dem Buch noch ein paar Seiten angeh ngt, um diese tolle Verwandlung dem Leser vor Augen zu f hren.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51263717212433,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51263719997713,"sku":"NIN9789180076029","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52406946234641,"sku":"NLS9789180076029","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9180076025.jpg?v=1750903975"},{"product_id":"campos-de-nijar-book-juan-goytisolo-9788432230066","title":"Campos De Nijar","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51767806066961,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51767806230801,"sku":"GOR006038548","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9788432230066.jpg?v=1751451998"},{"product_id":"etat-de-siege-book-juan-goytisolo-9782213602158","title":"Etat de siège","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52859422441745,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52859423850769,"sku":"NIN9782213602158","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}]},{"product_id":"juegos-de-manos-book-juan-goytisolo-9788423306794","title":"Juegos De Manos","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53177094897937,"sku":"GOR007967766","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53184624984337,"sku":"GOR006954384","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9788423306794.jpg?v=1772198415"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-au\/collections\/author-books-by-juan-goytisolo.oembed?page=3","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
