The advantages of reactors are light weight, high power, long life, and lower comparative costs. A nuclear reactor could simultaneously support large space vehicle electrical power requirements, and enable either electric or ionic propulsion. Nevertheless as technologically attractive as Space Nuclear Power (SNP) may be as a mission enabling technology, the use of SNP systems is currently politically challenging. Today, the United States has no active SNP systems, although there are missions that would benefit from SNP technology. This paper advocates a Values-Focused Decision Strategy for SNP within a transscientific context. If properly applied, the strategy should improve NASA's or the Department of Defense's chances of satisfying Congress of the political feasibility of an SNP program. The Values-Focused Decision Strategy outlines a democratically legitimate and scientifically rigorous mechanism to assist policy-makers in considering SNP as a trans-scientific policy option. If SNP is necessary for the U.S. to extend space based capabilities for science and security, then a political engagement strategy is required because nuclear SNP is a scientific problem that has entered the political realm of trans-science. Similar to other nuclear technologies, SNP has significant political risks that cannot be scientifically verified. Therefore, we believe that the most certain way to cultivate the unscientific public's trust is to improve both the underlying safety and robustness of nuclear and space technologies while engaging the public politically in an open and democratically transparent way.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50098503352593,"sku":"CIN0300013647G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50952564310289,"sku":"CIN0300013647VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51359525372177,"sku":"GOR002887693","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51916830540049,"sku":"GOR004033231","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0300013647.jpg?v=1751454794"},{"product_id":"limits-of-organization-book-kenneth-j-arrow-9780393093230","title":"The Limits of Organization","description":"The tension between what we wish for and what we can get, between values and opportunities, exists even at the purely individual level. A hermit on a mountain may value warm clothing and yet be hard-pressed to make it from the leaves, bark, or skins he can find. But when many people are competing with each other for satisfaction of their wants, learning how to exploit what is available becomes more difficult. In this volume, Nobel Laureate Kenneth J. Arrow analyzes why - and how - human beings organize their common lives to overcome the basic economic problem: the allocation of scarce resources.   The price system is one means of organizing society to mediate competition, and Arrow analyzes its successes and failures. Alternative modes of achieving efficient allocation of resources are explored: government, the internal organization of the firm, and the 'invisible institutions' of ethical and moral principles. Professor Arrow shows how these systems create channels to make decisions, and discusses the costs of information acquisition and retrieval. He investigates the factors determining which potential decision variables are recognized as such. Finally, he argues that organizations must achieve some balance between the power of the decision makers and their obligation to those who carry out their decisions - between authority and responsibility.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50315360239889,"sku":"GOR012546967","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50627461349649,"sku":"CIN0393093239G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50946469134609,"sku":"CIN0393093239VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51002024132881,"sku":"NIN9780393093230","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51304441577745,"sku":"GOR003075262","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52431594881297,"sku":"NLS9780393093230","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0393093239.jpg?v=1751071855"},{"product_id":"general-competitive-analysis-book-kenneth-j-arrow-9780444854971","title":"General Competitive Analysis","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50353649615121,"sku":"CIN0444854975G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52143243231505,"sku":"NLS9780444854971","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0444854975.jpg?v=1751007992"},{"product_id":"collected-papers-of-kenneth-j-arrow-book-kenneth-j-arrow-9780674137608","title":"Collected Papers of Kenneth J. In this first volume, Arrow takes up the basic question of whether collective choices can be made in such a way as to reflect individual preferences. The seminal 1950 paper that opens the volume shows that given certain reasonable conditions that social choices must satisfy to reflect individual preferences, it is impossible to make a choice among all sets of alternatives without violating some of the conditions. The subsequent papers extend, deepen, and clarify these results and examine the concept of justice, both in the abstract and in economic models. The first volume consists of four parts.  In Part 1 (Arrovian Impossibility Theorems), various aspects of Arrovian general impossibility theorems, illustrated by the simple majority cycle first identified by Condorcet, are expounded and evaluated.  It also provides a critical survey of the work on different escape routes from impossibility results of this kind.  In Part 2 (Voting Schemes and Mechanisms), the operation and performance of voting schemes and cost-sharing mechanisms are examined axiomatically, and some aspects of the modern theory of incentives and mechanism design are expounded and surveyed.   In Part 3 (structure of social choice rules), the positional rules of collective decision-making (the origin of which can be traced back to a seminal proposal by Borda), the game-theoretic aspects of voting in committees, and the implications of making use of interpersonal comparisons of welfare (with or without cardinal measurability) are expounded, and the status of utilitarianism as a theory of justice is critically examined.  It also provides an analytical survey of the foundations of measurement of inequality and poverty.  In order to place these broad issues (as well as further issues to be discussed in the second volume of the Handbook) in perspective, Kotaro Suzumura has written an extensive introduction, discussing the historical background of social choice theory, the vistas opened by  Arrow's Social Choice and Individual Values, the famous \"socialist planning\" controversy, and the theoretical and practical significance of social choice theory.  The primary purpose of this Handbook is to provide an accessible introduction to the current state of the art in social choice theory and welfare economics.  The expounded theory has a strong and constructive message for pursuing human well-being and facilitating collective decision-making.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52140778750225,"sku":"NLS9780444829146","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780444829146.jpg?v=1757575583"},{"product_id":"studies-in-resource-allocation-processes-book-kenneth-j-arrow-9780521034005","title":"Studies in Resource Allocation Processes","description":"One of the central questions of economics relates to the coordination of individual units within a large organization to achieve the central objectives of that organization. The publication of his collected papers will therefore be welcomed by economists and other social scientists and in particular by graduate students, who can draw from them the deep knowledge and the discernment in selection of scientific problems that only a master can offer. The author has added headnotes to certain well-known papers, describing how he came to write them.  The study of production is central to economic theory, and capital and its accumulation are two of the most interesting aspects of the modern production process. Capital may take the form of inventories of inputs, inventories of outputs, or machines and other fixed goods. The essential and unique aspect of all types of capital is that it must be accumulated as the result of prior stages of the production process. This gives the dynamic theory of production a recursive structure that can be exploited by economic analysis. The optimization of production under recursive conditions lends itself to general mathematical methods of dynamic programming and optimal control theory. This is the main theme of the essays included in this fifth volume of Kenneth Arrow's Collected Papers.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53090097266961,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53090097430801,"sku":"CIN0674137779G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780674137776.jpg?v=1770121571"},{"product_id":"collected-papers-of-kenneth-j-arrow-book-kenneth-j-arrow-9780674137615","title":"Collected Papers of Kenneth J. Arrow","description":"Unlike the papers of some other great economists, those of Kenneth Arrow are being read and studied today with even greater care and attention than when they first appeared in journals. This publication of his collected papers, to be completed in seven topical volumes, will be welcomed by economists and other social scientists and in particular by graduate students, who can draw from them the deep knowledge and taste in the selection of scientific problems that only a master can offer.  This volume is concerned with the foundations of neo-classical economic analysis. General equilibrium is a theory of prices in which all of the actions of the economic agents in an economy are determined simultaneously and in a decentralized fashion. The price system, determined in competitive markets, guides actions for both firms and individual consumers. All of the complex interrelations of the economy are distilled into the determination of this price system.  In these papers, Arrow examines the conditions under which such a price system would exist. He also clarifies the conditions under which the system can or cannot achieve an optimum. In the latter case, when “market failures” are present, he shows the role of a benevolent government in helping to overcome the induced inefficiencies.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53090189476113,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53090189902097,"sku":"CIN0674137612G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780674137615.jpg?v=1770124734"},{"product_id":"collected-papers-of-kenneth-j-arrow-book-kenneth-j-arrow-9780674137622","title":"Collected Papers of Kenneth J. The author has added headnotes to certain well-known papers, describing how he came to write them.  The third volume of Kenneth Arrow's Collected Papers concerns the basic concept of rationality as it applies to an economic decision maker. In particular, it addresses the problem of choice faced by consumers in a multicommodity world and presents specific models of choice useful in economic analysis. It also discusses choice models under uncertainty, giving the basic theory and critiques of this theory based on experimental evidence and applications. Among the major papers are \"Alternative Approaches to the Theory of Choice in Risk-Taking Situations,\" a masterly survey of subjective probability and choice theory, and \"The Theory of Risk Aversion,\" an exposition of the theory of choice under uncertainty.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53090190164241,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53090190393617,"sku":"CIN0674137620G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780674137622.jpg?v=1770124737"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-au\/collections\/author-books-by-kenneth-j-arrow.oembed?page=3","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
